OT - Grain Truck Feedback Requested

Guys,

I am looking at a couple grain trucks for this upcoming wheat harvest and wanted some feedback. Here are the two trucks I am considering:

1965 Ford 600 with 330 big block and 13" bed
1963 International 1800 with 345 and 14" bed

Both trucks are basically the same money ($300 difference)and both about the same mileage from me to go get. They are both in great condition and road/field ready.

If you were going to choose between the two, which would you choose. Whats the good and bad for both? FYI - wheat will be harvested with a 1955 John Deere 60 and an Allis All Crop model 60A!

Not enough information.
How far away is the elevator?
How long are the average waits to unload?

I started with a 1965 Chevy with a 292 and 2 speed axle, 14 foot bed hauled at best 300 bu. Did fine except the elevator is 6 miles away and the wait was at least 2 hours. Combine is a 4400 with 13' head, took 2-3 hours to load so from at the elevator to at the elevator was 5+ hours. Starting in the morning I could get 1 load delivered and 1 loaded.
Then I switched to a 10 wheel '78 chevy with 18' foot hauled just about 550 bu. Wait still 2 hours but now I was delivering more to a load.
Now I'm using an 18 wheeler, hauls 900-1000 bu. makes the wait FEEL not so bad. But takes all day to load so I deliver 1st thing in the morning every morning till I'm done.

So make an informed decision on the truck.
Either one will get 'er done.
And it depends on the condition--a broke down truck delivers nothin

I'm assuming this is for a hobby farm? If you are wanting to stay with vintage equipment either will be fine. I personally would choose the Ford but I'm a Ford guy, There are still a lot of those old IH trucks out there that are hauling from the field to the grain bin. I wouldn't want to go too far with either of them.

Thanks guys, this is for a 20 acre hobby farm and I do like the vintage equipment. Hence the JD 60 and All Crop 60 combine. Elevator is about 15 miles away and weight times are usually under 1 hr. Figured I am only talking about a couple maybe 3 trips to the elevator so I can take a few days off from work and get r done! Set the combine today and everthing is ready to go here in a few weeks when the crop is ready!

International was sold today so now I am mainly looking at the ford, also found a 63' Ford today with a 292 but recent over haul for the same money. Any difference between the 292 and 330 engines?

I spent many hours hauling wheat in a Ford like that. Loved that truck. Good, simple, and very dependable. I assume it is a 4 and 2? That old truck would fly home from the elevator at 70 mph easy. The only drawback I could see with ours was that it didn't have saddle tanks and that fuel tank behind the seat didn't last all day with lots of loads of heavy wheat. That, and those tapered dash knobs that cracked when you really needed them (like the wipers!).

If there was a choice between the two and all else was identical, I would go with the 330 in a heartbeat.

I won't ever own a Ford other than a heavy truck. That being said, I don't think anyone out there can outlast their big trucks. You'll love it.

Any of those trucks will do what you need. In the midwest rust would be the deciding factor among the old trucks.

The 330 was designed as a truck engine and the 292 was not as heavy duty. Dad used to have a 1960 F-600 with the 4 speed transmission, two speed axle, and a 4-barrel carburetor on the 292. The hired driver rolled it one day when I was at school.

So now it's between the '63 and '65 Ford, right? Go with the "65! Ford made quite a few good updates in those two yrs. Even in their cars , a '65 was way better than a '63.

You WILL post photos when you get at this project right? I love when I am doing oats here and people do a double take as they drive by. The best is when the odd one turns around and drives by for another look. Two years back I did about 10 acres of soybeans with the JD M and 12-A,was very sure these beans were the only ones put through a pull type combine delivered to the local elevator in a LONG time!!

The Ford is BEST , by this much .. ,Throwed a rod in my 330 at 138,000,, couple years before that B-i-l had a 345 IHC , throwed a rod in it too

I prefer Chevys from that era(I own a'68 C-50),but either truck will serve well. The 'binder' may be a little harder to find parts for,but those IH trucks are some of the toughest trucks out there.

just wanted to put my two cents in about 60s ford f600 trucks.a 65 or 63 dose not mater a lot,pre 64 had a 292 truck engne that had truck heads and made the same horse power as the 330 in 64 but at lower rpm.some y blocks like 292 had lub problems at the valves when they were new but ford fixed this with cam barings that had oil grove on inside and outside.i use a 49 f5 on my farm along with other fords up to 77. i lick them all.
