OT - light bulbs

I have a couple of those work flood lamps that are on stands that I use for working on my tractor and painting the bloody beast. They were originally 500w halogen bulbs. I had a brilliant idea that if I put 250w bulbs in I could run more on a circuit. However, the 250s seem to be going out way too often. It appears the bases fracture and then they don't work. Is there something about this that fundamentally won't work?

I've replaced 500w with 250 and they've been working for years. Be careful that you don't touch the bulbs with your bare fingers as the oil from fingers will cause the glass to fail.

I was very careful. I took them out of the pack with a paper towel. However since the bases are fracturing, I was leaning towards cheap chinese crap.
