ot jeep engines

girlfriend is looking at jeeps, I like the 4.0 but she wants the 5.2 v8. In your opinion which is longer lasting and more reliable?

Don"t know about the 5.2, but have a 4.0 in a Cherokee. Has 252,000 on it right now. Showing no signs of giving up. Still getting around 19 to 20 mpg average (I carry a few hundred pounds of tools in it all the time, so may do better if it were ever just me in it....).

The 5.2 is a good engine, but the 4.0 with a little care can hit 250,000 to 300,000 without major work. Fuel economy on the 4.0 is much better.

Both are very good engines, proven through the years. She probably doesn't need the v-8 and the fuel economy would tip the scale for the 6 cyl. all other factors equal.

the reason I like the 4.0 is there easy to work on and have plenty of pep. I'm pretty sure the 5.2 is pretty thirsty. the most that we would ever tow is a little 14 foot aluminum boat.

I"ve had several of the 4.0 Jeeps. Drivetrains have typically outlasted vehicle body, in my experience(south central MI). Pretty easy to get to everything, plenty of room under the hood. First one I bought, owned it 16 years, body rotted away, pulled the engine as it still ran strong even with 307011 miles on it, only regular maintenance and tune ups.

4.0 definitely gets my vote.

Good luck, and let us know which way you guys go on it.

Anthony

Will do. Just trying to get some responses so she can see her friend its full of it. He is telling her the v8 is more efficient.

my vote goes for the 4.0 for a few reasons. the main one isnt so much the engine itself, its the transmission thats behind it. The AW4 auto and the AX15 standard are both bulletproof. I cant remember whether its the 42 or 46re that comes behind the 5.2, but i do know its junk. Im big into the offroad crowd and have heard nothing but bad things about that stupid trans. I had one friend that went through the trouble of mating an AX15 to the 5.2 because he got sick of changing the auto trans.

the 4.0 is also better one fuel but has just as much get up and go to it.

That being said, i have blown up a few 4.0s, but that was from being ABUSED HARD!!!! and when i say hard, i mean hard. i hydro locked one and the #6 piston didnt like it so it made and exit out the side of the block and i continued to wheel for the rest of the day on 5 cylinders.

I say go for the 4.0 and if possible, the AX15 and u will easily clear 20mpg mixed driving.

I would say go with the 4.0. But if she was to go with the V-8 be sure the timing gears and chain have been replaced, if not they should be!

May be different in Mexico, but for the last few years, Jeep V-6 engine is 3.7. The last 4.0 I saw was a 06 model I think. I drove both 08 Liberty and 10 Nitro with the 3.7 and can't say anything bad about them.

4.0 hands down. The 5.2 engines are not on the same plain as the 4.0. The 4.0 is a 200k+ motor. My daily driver is a jeep cherokee with the 4.0 in it. My car as of this morning has 232k miles with no engine work. The transmission is great and like others have said BULLETPROOF

You must one rough cobb job operator and fixer.
296,000 miles on my Grand National race engine. 136,000 mile son the LQ4 truck engine. Oil doesn't drop from the full to add in 3000miles.
Gasser vehicles out there with 300,000 miles and running fine. With just plugs, filters and oil are the norm.
It's not 1975 when any engine, if it did actually wheeze to 100,000 miles. It was a worn out, oil burning gutless clunk.

To add to my prior post. I don't think you need much more power out of an suv then the 4.0 will give you. Its a pretty peppy and fast suv for what it is. The down side is you can tow much with them because they are a unibody but the v-8 doesn't change that either. I cant say ive been easy on my jeep at all and it hasn't given me any real problems. Things I have replaced is U-joints, I replaced the rear-end because it was getting noisy and worn out and brakes. I cant complain

Have a little Cherokee with 4.0 in it- replaced clutch when I got it cheap, runs good since, a bit of rust and floor rot. Some light towing, a few overloads. Point is it is the "small" Cherokee, not the full size wagon or J4000 sized pickup and it is supposed to be towing only motorcycle trailer with maybe 1000 pounds or little Vardo camper.. V8 is for full sized models towing 3000 pounds or more. So what Jeep is she interested in and what kind of load anticipated? RN

Had her convinced on a regular cherokee, but this guy friend of hers doesn't like the 4.0, I keep telling her she is going to regret the v8 as far as fuel millage. The most towing will be a14ft aluminum boat. With the trailer I can see it being more than 1000 miles in the high side

I would go with the 4.0.

Drive Right USA sells right hand drive Jeep Cherokees to rural mail carriers.

They guarantee the engines for 300,000 miles as long as Castrol Synthetic is used and changed every 3000 to 4000 miles.

That should tell you all you need to know about the 4.0 engine. DOUG

4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0

In my opinion, experience, and what I've heard: 4.0 plenty of power for what you want, plus the added reliability, longevity and better fuel mileage.

Back in the CJ days, there was a fair difference between the 258 6cyl and the 304 V8--so you would have a strong argument back then for the V8, depending on what you were doing, but even at that, the 258 would do fine for what you want, back in those days. Some people have had a bad experience with a six, rarely, or are just V8 guys on everything and don''t care for 6-bangers, no matter what.

I honestly think she would regret the V8--go test drive a few.
See the difference. The six is pretty peppy, and there are modifications available if you decided you wanted more power out of the six--personally, stock 4.0 is the best bet.

There's always a lemon out there somewhere, but that's the same odds as the V8.

Good luck, either way, Cherokee's are fun to drive. If she wants a little more room, go with a Grand Cherokee. For me, my Cherokee got a little uncomfortable with less space to shift around on longer trips, compared to my wifes Grand Cherokee. There's differences in the suspension, etc too on the Grand vs. the standard Cherokee. Drive one of those to, if you can, just to see--and still the 4.0 is the way to go in the Grand.

Did I mention I prefer the 4.0???

Just changed the 4.0 engine in my Jeep with 266 thousand miles with a broken piston and rod went through the cylinder. Runs about 16 MPG. My 5th avenue got hit broadside and totaled at 430,000 miles. Just starting to use a little oil. 318 and running 25-27 MPG.

I have had 3 jeeps with the 4.0 engine and have had no problems 200,000 plus miles. HOWEVER I have a 4.7 V-8 and the engine went at 133, 000 miles.

The 4.7 had a sludge problem, (lots of info on this). The sludge blocks the oil pump pickup screen and the engine starves from not enough oil. It doesn't matter what brand of oil was used it would still sludge up.

I can't speak for the 5.2 V8

You must of got the only Buick GN engine that was any good, most ended up in machine shops to be redone, one of the worst engines made. No my maintenance program is perfect, probably put yours to shame. So you have two examples and thats it? Ha ha. your funny. Yeah and there are 20 year old dogs out there but very few, whats your point? How many nickel dime problems did they have getting to 300K???
