I found ball bearings in my crankcase and chased it back to the bearings in the govener. i have the whole tractor torn down and have the govener completley off. how do i get the shaft out to replace the spring and the ball bearings. i can't seem to get it out. is there a snap rign that has to come off on the magnito side?

the problem was the tractor was ideling to fast. first impression was the spring was shot.

Joe,
I had the same symptoms and problems with the governor on my 34 A. When I tore into it in addition to the bearing being shot, I also found the the governor shaft was busted. You have to remove the fan shaft and the inside governor lever (the forked lever inside that rides on the gov. shaft sleeve). Then the shaft, gears and all will come out the flywheel side of the housing. I had mine off tractor, on a bench so that made it a little easier. I have not worked on the later Model A governors but I think they are all very similar.

While you are at it you might as well remove the fanshaft from the tube, and check those bearings too. Might save tearing it down again, and they do fail occasionally.
