O/T Auto Insurance Question

My son is attending grad school in Illinois--we live in Michigan. We have him listed as an occasional driver on our policy. He wants to get an Illinois drivers license and plates. Can we still keep him on our policy even if he gets the car registered in another state?

Thanks.

Larry

The car has to be insured in the same state in which it's registered. If his car's registered in your name, you could keep it licensed and insured in your home state. If it's in your son's name, he will need to register it in Illinois when he gets his Illinois driver's license.

I live in Mi but my youngest is 30 years old. As they were growing up it was my understanding that as long as they had a ins. policy of there own I did not have to carry them on mine. They would be covered though on my car if they were to use it though. As they each moved away or was off to college I would sometimes take a copy of there policy to ins. co to prove they had coverage and a different address than mine. Maybe things have changed since I had to worry about it but it sure was nice when they left as far as my ins. bill was concerned. I would always keep a older vehicile with PL&Pd on it for there use when they did live at home.

mark is correct also due to what i just found on my policy y'all would do nicely to look carefully at your policys and make sure there correct, case in point, i recently sold my kenworth truck due to my health and the fact that these days being a owner operater really isnt paying much, bought a nice 80 model chevy 1 ton flatbed from a friend that didnt need it, he bought it new, and it had only been driven 50,000 miles from new, anyway, on the insurance policy they had it as this; 80 model k-30 chevy, cost new 95,000, declared gross vechicle weight 80,000, ect ect, the idiots had changed the name on the truck buyt not the coverage i was paying the kw's 1 million doller coverage on the old 80 model chevy! we got that fixed yesterday, my payment now for 4 trucks is now 1/4th what it was 2 days ago, it always pays to look lol

First of all , that makes him the principal driver and not an ocasional in which case why would you even want him on your policy? If he's under 25 and using your address you are already paying way too much for your ins. Cut the cord , you will both be better off. Put it all in his neme and in that state. Nothing saying you cant pay for it if you feel the obligation. They don't care who pays it as long as it is paid.
