Our son is about done with his first enlistment in the Navy. He is going to re-enlist and after training will be stationed in Des Moines, Ia. as a recruiter. He asked us to come out and be there when he signed up, so I took the day off from work and we left as soon as the wife got home from work. Made the trip OK, met him and his wife there. Got to be time for the signing, and he handed me a piece of paper and said you have to read this to me. I got to be the one to swear him in, they had this set up, had a ranking officer there to witness it, so it's all legal. Nice surprise for me, never dreamed I'd be a part of it! Afterwards, we went out to eat and then his wife had a Dr's appointment, she is due any day with their 2nd child, and we watched our grandson while they went in to see Dr. They are going to start her today, so we will soon have grandchild #5. We got home and I got started planting beans about 5:30. Long day but worth it. Chris

MY HAT GOES OFF FOR ALL YOUR FAMILY!!! I wonder how many older people wish they could say these kinds of things with gladness in them!

First of all, I will thank your son for his service to our country. I think it was a really great thing that you got to be a part of his re-enlistment ceremony. Glad that you and your wife was able to be with him and his family. I'm sure all envolved will treasure this day for years to come. It makes for good stories to tell the grand kids and anyone else.

I have never understood the change in attitude whereby it is almost mandatory that we thank a serviceman for his sacrifice while serving in the military.

Those if us who served during the Vietnam era, particularly those in the Army or Marines, endured greater sacrifice in terms of bodily injury and pay. Nowadays, with unemployment at high levels, service is a career choice, not an obligation that truly qualifies as a sacrifice.

One has to wonder if recent recruits at Parris Island get the same "appreciated welcome" as we did when disembarking the bus. Probably not.

Hi Wardner: I can still recall seeing WW-2 News Reels shown at local movie theater and adults talking about close relatives in service. Just a few years later I again saw News reels of Korea at war and adults talking about relatives in service. A few more years later I just finished active duty in Army and I heard & saw adults talking about Vietnam starting... what a change after that War got cranked up...
The 1960s was unreal to the older WW-2 adults.
I think I can relate to your comments.. Thanks for posting... and your time in Service. ag

My hat is off to all who currently are serving or are veterans. Thankyou.
Super 99, did you stop to eat at Texas Road House? We have a really good one on 86th and I-80.

I am glad super99 had a good time with his son and wish him the all the best.

As a nam vet I do wonder sometimes about the way the new vets are treated. Not that they don't deserve it. Glad to see them being treated better than us nam vets were. I remember just about having to sneak back in to the country. At the debreifing at T.I. We were given a list of places to stay away from. VFW and American Legion clubs were at the top of the list.

For one I think collectively the population feels bad about the way Viet Nam verterans were treated. This was brought home during the celebrations and homecommings from Gulf War 1 when they made sure due respect was paid to them. But these guys and gals are constantly being sent over there, some with 5 and 6 tours. National Guard is not for combat but for service over here, and we really need them this flood season; but there they are continualy being put in harms way.
In my view, God Bless all service members, past and present; and their families too!

My son has been out of the Navy a little less than a year. I heard him tell several times about them having re-enlistment ceremonies after the ship was out at sea, in international waters. That way the re-enlistment bonus was 100% tax free.

I guess even the military has its angles to avoid taxes.

Thanks for your sons service!!

Gene

I'll never forget that "smokie the bear" hat rim right even with my eyebrows and the DI's hot breath in my face,,,awe to be young again!!

I returned from Vietnam on a medivac air craft to a Navy hospital. Protesters were spitting on returning vets at the public airport. I was not spit at or I would still be in jail. My My how times change.

Congratulations to you and your son and family. I was a recruiter during Vietnam, not by choice but by selection. Navy kept one very important promise to me. I said I would not lie. I never was asked to. Good duty. Dave
