OT-firewood for tractor shop

Better than quaking aspen, probably most similar to poplar, long way from hickory or oak.

If you season it, it will burn.

Catalpa wood is a soft wood. It will burn if dry. It will not burn very hot or long. Not many BTU per cord in it.
Delta Red catalpa trees have long beans that hang down on them. I think the beans are poisonous.

Where I come from quaking aspen IS poplar. Its good firewood in that it'll burn hot and it'll burn even if its still kind of green but its real gopher wood. Meaning don't lock the door you gotta go fer wood.

By weight , Dry wood has the same heat content. But it takes a bigger pile of soft wood to equal a smaller pile of hard wood.

JDSeller posted the correct picture of the tree, but it's also known as "The Indian Cigar Tree". Ever heard that name before? I reckon if the indians smoked those beans, they would go on the warpath!

You will find that the bark of the catalpa won't support a fire very well. Try to start the fire on the split side of the log. It produces a very sweet smelling smoke, like ceder.

"the Indian cigar tree" I think refers to fact that woodcarvers use catalpa logs to carve cigar store Indians. Catalpa is decent carving wood and it's color makes a nice cigar store Indian.

Good & dried, it`ll burn alright, fact its perty good for kindle`n. But it`ll spark a good bit too, nothing like hedge but thats a nother story
