I will be hauling 2 horses this weekend. One is my daughters the other her friends. Best route to the horse show takes us past scales on the interstate. I do not own either critter, do not show horses, and will not be compensated in any way. Weight is not an issue, trailer is liscensed for 9k. Pickup has commercial plates but is my personal vehicle. If the scales are open that day do I need to cross them or am I exempt?

Dave my state has a law that farm equipment may be towed or moved with out a licence or a plate (registration) this includes balers, tractors, mowers cranberry and, bluberry equipment. Our farm bureau fought hard for this and won it years ago. Was wondering your take on it and if other states have it? Some livestock and feeds are included. Thank you

Farm "equipment" including hay wagons and gravity wagons are indeed exempt from licensing. You are not permitted to tow these vehicles on interstate highways.

Do what smily does when you drive past the scales.

If they want you they will come and get you.
