U-Haul hauling a tractor

GMC Sprint

New User
I thought I would post and let people know
U-Haul has changed their rules and now
allows you to haul a tractor on an auto
transport trailer. I hauled a Massey
Ferguson 135 (unbalasted) with a bush hog
500 miles without issue. Additional
straps are needed to secure the tractor.

I was rushed and didn't take pictures, but
I had 2 straps from the axles to the
trailer cross member, and another strap
over the bush hog. The 5ft bush hog hung
of the back a little bit (even with the
tail wheel folded up). The tires just fit
at their narrowest setting.

I was bringing a bunch of implements too,
so I used a 20ft e450 U-Haul truck. The
only truck I have a GMC Sprint (El
Camino). There trailer was obviously
above it's capability.

Hope you don't have to make a sudden stop , you will need a torch to cut out what you strapped in the truck. Best of luck.CM

Nice-looking Massey. Did they care what kind of tractor when you rented the trailer? As in what make and model? I posted something about this in the past and it generated quite a bit of discussion. No longer an issue for me since I have a very good car trailer now.

Nice tractor. Never thought about it but that does sound like a good rig. How do they know you are hauling a tractor. Pay the rent, take rig home and load.

Not that easy.
They want to know tow rig and what your gonna haul so they can put it into the uhaul computer program.
The program then tells the dealer go or no go.

I do know they would not rent a trailer to haul a full size Buick with a full size 1/2 ton Chevy truck.

(quoted from post at 18:22:11 05/30/22) How much maximum weight?

Hooked, you may want to rephrase your question. Are you asking what is the maximum weight an any U-haul trailer? Or what was the OP's total GCVW? Or maybe how much did the 135 and brush hog together weigh? Or maybe what is U-haul's maximum GCVW?

YT doesn't charge by the letter so if you add a few so that readers know what you are asking you may get answers.

Ok. This is how I used a u-haul trailer to haul a Ford 50 hp tractor and a bush hog cutter and a bush hog finishing mower about 250 miles. 1. I told them I was hauling a Ford 500 AWD. If you say a 2WD car, they will hassle you about the using just a trolley thing, as if it was their business at all and you can't do that with AWD hence...
2. I towed with a 1/2 ton. I worked for GM Truck and other auto companies and know a little about light passenger trucks. The weakest link in light truck towing is the brakes. Coming South from Nashville down a mountain is a different route vs. across the flatlands of Alabama. Consider this carefully. Can you maintain a reasonable, safe speed with your tow vehicle and your route and you have enough brakes to stop in any weather/wind/wet? With trailer, tractor and implements I was at the limit, I was also on a route that was flat flat flat in good weather.
3. You are going to put the front wheels on the front of the trailer so no discussion about balancing the weight applies. If it is going to lighten your nose, your steering may suffer. How much tongue weight? 400-600lbs. How do you know? Get two fat guys about 250 lbs each. measure bumper height unloaded, add fat guys on the bumper and remeasure. that difference is 500 lbs tougue. now measure the difference with the trailer attached. Get the idea? Is your Tacoma squatting? Consider renting a u-haul truck to pull the trailer if you need more truck.
4. Carpet over the middle of the tractor will protect it from the chain and binder you will toss over.
5. Your trailer should be level, use an adjustable hitch to make it so. Very important.
6. So many "accidents" happen in trailering due to speed. 55-60 is fine and just set the cruise and the trailer setting for the transmission and have the discipline to remain mellow. Give yourself the time to complete the mission.
7. The inside track of the trailer is 80 inches, a Ford 3600 is 78 inches. The wheel track is a limiting factor in what you can haul.
8. Check for underinflation on every tire.

one chain and binder over the transmission?? If that is all....ummm
NO.

I will run least one chain one or two chains from front axle down to the trailer. Then one or two chains from rear axle to trailer with binders on each with handles wired closed
