Oil bath axle question

Can someone tell me how to set the wheel bearings on a dexter 8000lbs oil bath axle? Dont even have 500 miles on my new trailer and I have a wheel bearing loose. Checked my warranty and of course its considered normal maintenance which is fine. Just need to figure out how to do it.

Run the nut tight sounding the hub by hand then back the nut off until theres a little bit of resistance to the hub turning . I usually do it a couple times to make sure the bearings are seated

You need to preload the brg. to around 70-80 ft lbs. while turning the tire. Then u back off the nut to 0 preload then u tighten the nut to a slight preload and lock her there make sure u have no end play, u need the brgs with a preload on them. I just go by feel. New brgs need more preload , used brgs. Less preload. Plus have the brgs oiled.

Timken and other bearing manufacturers typically recommend .001 to .005 ENDPLAY on wheel hub bearings.

They are NOT supposed to be preloaded.

Don't believe me? GOOGLE Setting Timken axle bearings.

All the ones Ive ever done I would run the nut tight while spinning the hub until it locked up then back it off until there is just a tiny bit of resistance never fad a problem yet on semis drive axles steer axles abc trailer Hubs
Wheel bearing setup .

I always set mine up like Wore out said. I haven't had any problems. Bring it up tight, then back it up.

The first 500 mi. are critical with the entire trailer. My PJ manual was well written. Download yours and familiarize yourself with your new purchase!CM

Just set them like you did your car wheel bearings back in the 40's and 50's. tight and back off till turns free then tight to the next notch. Wheel should not wiggle when done.

How to set wheel bearing preload ?? Ask that question and you will get 10000 answers of how to do it . for a plain old grease bearing and old style seal is one thing and with a oil bearing and seal here again depending on what seal. with the new style seal ya want 0 free play and a light preload on the bearings . Yea i know some will say YOUR GOING TO BURN UP THE BEARING . Welp sofar i have not burnt up bearings . I can not tell you how many wheel seals i have replaced on other peoples trucks back in the days of working on big trucks and trailers , my goose neck had seal issues when i got it and with the factory axle nuts you could NOT get a good bearing set it was either WAY to tight or way to loose and eat wheel seals like M&M's , to get the just right preload i had to use shims and once that was done i never had a seal problem . My 88 Ford with the 10 1/4 sterling rear end ate seals with the factory set and to solve that one 45 Ft.Lb.s of preload solved the wheel seals . semi tractors and trailers were set the same way and with the loads we hauled we never had a seal or bearing problem . rear end pinion and side bearings are preloaded to a rolling torque and ya don't see them going south unless something first starts a bearing failure . Never was a crank it down till it won't move person then back it off and snug it up person like some would say crank it down and then back off a 1/4 turn she'll be fine and two days later your undercoating the frame and inside the tire and lubing the brakes.
