What size winch do I need

I have a 18ft car hauler trailer with a 2ft dove tail steel floor. The trailer has 2 3500 pound axles. So i can only haul roughly 5000 pounds.
I always double line my winch.
My father-in-law uses an atv winch.
I have a cheap 3500 winch. I was thinking about getting a little bit stronger winch what size of winch do I need I've been looking at the traveler brand 4500 pound winch at tractor supply.
Thanks for any thoughts you might have

Get the biggest rated line pull winch you can afford, as some day you may get a heaver GVW trailer. I have a 8500 lb winch on my 14 gvw trailer pulls any thing on that have hooked to it.

I agree get the largest you think you can afford, it will last longer, also look into a remote control they are great when you have to steer something while you are winching. BTW I also have a 8500# on my 14,000 trailer.

Like what has already been said, bigger is better when it comes to winches, but if your on a budget you will want to stay under the 5000# mark, because of price.as a side note,I have a travellar 4500# and it wor flawlessly,I bought it on clearance for 90 bucks.

I have a cheapie 12,000 lb winch like Harbor Freight sells they run $300 to $400 its about 7 years old has been fine for me.I usually double line it because its runs a little too fast.
Also taking off some of the cable gives it more power less likely to overlapp the cable too much.

I would love to find an older heavy duty manual winch because you don't have to deal with battery or electrical wire.
Honestly I don't use a winch once every couple of years.

What ever i decide to do i am going to mount a receiver hitch to the trailer so the which can be stored in the shop out of the weather

Thanks
