Some tractor hauler repair

Lost a few teeth on the fifth gear . Everything else looks pretty good inside I?m going to go ahead and replace the mainshaft fifth gear as well as the countershaft mating gear even though it looks fine . Also going to go ahead and put a new input shaft in and reset the end play to spec .

With these little five speeds it?s common consensus to not tow heavy in fifth or overdrive but I do because I?m limited to about 55 which is fine for most hauls but I still like to run in overdrive

Yep , they will not take hauling in over drive . Really a pour set up from day one . Like my 95 dodge with 4.10 gear 56 MPH is flat out in forth against the pump at 2650 . So it never got turned into the trailer totter . But i am still pushing my luck due to the fact that i set a 10500 lbs with everything i carry on a 11000 gvw. So if you fololow what the GOOD BOOK says max that should be running over drive is around 8750 GVW. . And those figures are for stock engine settings . The whole mess was and engineering screw up from the start . So if ya want a trailer totter then today what you need is and older ton and a half or two ton truck that you can adapt to your needs . We all try and do more with less . I did it for years but it cost me . I use to run a F 350 Ford pulling my goose neck . 460 five speed and 4.10 i never ran O D while pulling the trailer . BUT with the 460 in forth the engine was always running in the 3- 3500 RPM range and for it that was a good thing as it was in the power range .

Cost a good bit but I swapped mine to 3.73 gears, can now run 55 mph in direct gear at 2200 rpm, only time I shift into OD is on interstates or cruising around empty.
A guy on the Cummins forum finally swapped in a later G56 6 spd in his 97 3500 after going thru several NV4500's

My tow pig is a 04 F-450 with 12v Cummins and Ford ZF6 6 spd manual.

SV, just received a check for truck that you saw when I saw you last fall. Not going to post amount. More than I thought. Going to fix my buddies 5 spd in his 98 dodge. Good luck to you.

I?m sitting at 9860 before I hook anything to I?m usually right up against 28 to as high as 30,000 and few around 36000 with a load on . I?ve thought of a bigger truck but if I can throw a set of OD gears in this every five or six years I?ll keep tuning this outfit . The NV4500 doesn?t have near as many problems In the Chevy as it does behind the Cummins .

I?ve got 3.54 I can run 70 at 2700 but I don?t like to
Run it that hard . I tell myself that I?ll only use fourth
when I?m hauling but I never keep my word

Nope, didn't sell it. Insurance company totaled it. Smoke damage from being in a building that the shop next door burned. Can buy 2 more with the settlement.

I had that same thing happen to me . I bought a 99 and had it 6 months and totaled it they sent me a check for 4000.00$ More than I paid for it should have totaled it the week I bought it .

Bought it back. Putting newer interior in it. Think I may have an aluminum bed for it, Cheap. Will know Saturday. Nothing really wrong with truck, other than interior got smoked. Just rebuilt the head and put 97-98 5 spd injectors in it.

The 24 valve guys say they get better fuel mileage at 65 tight to the governor than at 70 at a lower rpm.

A governor spring kit might help with that 4th gear top speed.

I have plenty of rpm I just don?t like ruining that high . I?ve logged many thousands of miles on 12 valves and 24 valve dodge trucks and have never came up with better mileage towing at high rpm than lower . I may just limit myself to 55 and use fourth gear but I probably won?t .

I meant to say I can run 70 mph in 4th gear at about 2700 -2750 rpm but I just hate to scream a motor that hard . But I also hate pulling transmissions but once every five or six years isn?t that bad

That?s just it and it?s to bad dodge used that transmission but cant change it now . If I ever got rich I?d swap a 6 speed in but holy cow Is that slot of money honey

The bad paqrt is that Chrysler crawled in bed with GM over the transmissions . They are IMHO totally wrong , gear spacing is totally wrong , rev. is way to fast and a poorly designed over drive and totally wrong rear end gear set for hyway driving . Yesterday while doing my trolling i saw a nice little I H low pro that with a little work would have made a great trailer totter . The rear axle needed moved forward on the LONG rear frame ( not a big deal of moving a rear axel ) and changing out the five speed to a 6 plus 1 and doing a swap on rear gears to suit you for where you want to run . You could even do a whole rear end swap and go with a 2 speed with a 6 plus one . And at the price of a JUNK Dodge Cummins you could be back on the road . They wanted 2500 asking for it and it did drive .
With a little BARN YARD engineering you COULD even make it a 4 wheel drive usen a N P 205 divorced transfer case and a Dana 60 Ft with 4.10 and a 4.10 rear setting on 19.5 tires on bud rims . The ft. axle would need to be out of a F 350 Ford with leaf springs as that one was set up for a 34 inch frame and BIG trucks frames are 34 inches .

I agree. I don't run mine at high speeds either. I use 2-6 usually. I've seen issues with the dogs sticking on the fifth gear preventing engagement. I love my cast iron case 6 speed. Pilot bearing failed. It got a complete LUK kit, flywheel and all. After I did mine I found out Cummins recommended replacing the flywheel to crank bolts due to fracturing. Live and learn.

I?d really like to go to a 6 speed but it?s about a 4000$ bill to do it maybe if I get rich and famous I?ll do it . I see some guys are putting ten speeds in them as well but I think I?ll buy a single axle tractor before I did that the coolness would wear of pretty fast for a daily driver

I like the looks of the new ones but I'm doing a six speed automatic out of a newer Dodge diesel now and I'm not impressed with the lip seals or the underdrive return spring pack. The cheap cage broke, the pan filter split open and the tranny burned up. $2,000.00 from a salvage yard plus the old one. I'll take the manual.

I have even though about swapping out the engine adapter to a type 2 and doing a Rt 909 -910 road ranger and a old style NP205 transfer case , then the weak points would be the Dana 80 rear and the dana 60 ft. Would not take much of and air compressor to keep a small tank for air to shift the transmission , then i want to see you take that our with a 5.9 with the wick turned up .

a little word of advice here , If you want to haul IRON then it takes IRON to haul it . I don't care what slush box you try and use or how you think your making it BULLET PROOF they all go yuck yuco PHEW EEEE . I played the game with SLUSH BOXES and could build a wicked C4 C6 and the 727 but they still drop kicked ya when ya needed them the most . up tioll they new generation of standard transmissions we never had failures , ya we had guys that took out scynros hammering them speed shifting usually broken blocking rings but i can not think of a time with a heavy duty trans taking out gears unless a shaft bearing took a dump . I did take second gear out of a T 10 four gear way back just after the Mayflower headed back , but that was a colear cut case of way more pony power then the gears could handle and a upgrade to a bigger four gear stopped that ., The way the NV 4500 is built is like the O D was and after thought like oh hey maybe we need to add in and O D so we will install it behind the main case and built the tail shaft housing to accommodate it it will be FINE .

I dumped 5000$ into a 47re dodge trans it was supposed to be the biggest baddest thing on planet earth . It was for about 30,000 miles then it blew up again if had that to do over again I wouldn?t have . I may just be getting old enough I may convince myself running 4th is ok these little nv4500 are pretty dang tough when you really think of it I think they are rated for gvw of about 19,000 and 450 ft pounds of torque .

The f650 used the zf6 behind the 5.9, with a separate bell housing from the transmission case, unlike the f25-f350. If you can find a wrecked f650 with the 5.9 in a junkyard you have everything you need for the swap.

The nv4500 OD issues weren't nearly so pronounced behind gas engines, the Cummins harmonics at low rpm are what it doesn't seem to like.

New Venture gear was once New Process, a division of Chrysler.

Finally going back the other direction! Got everything cleaned up and new gears on . Went ahead and replaced the input shaft and bearing while I was inside . Replaced 3 and 4 synchros replaced fifth gear snychro . A big squirt of bearing retainer Loctite under on the fifth gear main shaft gear then more on the nut pulled it as tight as I could with my big ratchet then had to give it another quarter with the hammer and chisel technique so the nut retainer would line up .

Had a customer with quite a few of those in his fleet.

GM part # 12346190 is the synthetic oil to use in them if you want them to last.

The oil is discontinued. The guy I buy all my parts
from has a red line oil that is gl-4 not gl-5
backwards compatible it Is gl-4 he has many years
experience building these so I trust him if he
recommends it that?s what I?ll use. Gm dealers may
still have the part number but it also could be just
like dodge just an updated part number so I don?t
trust it and there is no Chevy dealer within 70 miles
of here . I?ve always had the best Luck with oem oil
in these I?ve heard of guys running the Amsoil with
good success I?ve never been a amsoil fan though

A better view of the gear

While the ol girl is in the shop I decided to ahead and service the front and rear differentials and change the transfer case oil and filter .
