Anyone have experience with Chevy/GMC 1500 HD trucks? I remember when they came out. Saw one a couple of weeks ago: 99-02 I think, crew cab with 6 1/2 bed, 4x4. I noticed it had 8-lug wheels. Are they more than a 1/2-ton and less than a 3/4-ton? Full-floating rear axle, or semi-floating? Please share if you know anything about them.
Thanks.

The 1500HD only came in one configuration: Crew cab short bed. 8600lb GVWR. Semi-floating rear axle, and 8-lug hubs.

It's what they used to call a "light duty" 3/4 ton truck back in the day, though back then the GVWR was 7200lbs. But the trucks weighed less empty too, so overall payload was a wash.

Dad's previous truck was a 2000 Chevy "2500" (non-HD) which is mechanically equivalent to the 1500HD, but a regular cab long bed. It served his pickup truck needs for 18 years, but it's completely rusted out now.

I would not shy away from one if you can find one in good shape. Most of them are getting pretty long in the tooth at this point, though.

By the way, his 2000 "2500" was a new body style (GMT800). It was one of the first ones off the line. Most 2500 and 3500 trucks in 2000 were still the old GMT400 body style.

Thanks for the info. You confirmed what I thought about the 1500 HD.

You can look on KBB and/or NADA and they show some models of the 400 continued into 99, alongside the new 800 trucks. I didn't know they continued into 2000 as well. Thanks.

[Back in Aug 87 my dad and mom ordered a new 88 GMC 1500 (GMT400) from a small local GM dealer in Cairo, IL. It was actually the first one of the new trucks that dealer sold. The styling was so different from the previous series that some people didn't like it. They used it to pull their 25' 5th wheel trailer for 12 1/2 years. I bought it after that and kept it for 3 more years. Up until about a year ago I knew where that truck was. I don't see it around here anymore.]
