trailer winch

I put a Ramsey 8500 winch on my goose neck trailer, best money I ever spent. No problem loading a none running, tractor, car or any thing on wheels.

The $400 Harbor Freight 12K has served me well. I especially
like the wireless remote. Snatch block and patience pays off
when loading a disabled tractor up the ramps

I purchased a Patriot 9500 15 years ago.......

A winch to small for the tasks at hand can be a poor investment...

No problems...Winch has been used extensively.....

A hard cover/ box to protect the winch is a must.....

I have a Badlands 12,000 lb also. I keep it covered when I am not using it. I use a snatch block when pulling a dead tractor. I pulled tractors that were stuck with it if I could get close enough.

Harbor freight 12K pulled this truck on in less time then it took to chain it down. Single line. I mounted it on a receiver plate
and keep it in the shop and can use it on different trailers or the hitch on my truck.

We have a large Dayton winch w/ 7/16 cable.Snatch block
is a must, and like what has been said below. patients when
loading. It?s not a horse race you want it on the trailer. I
suggest mounting it on the deck, rather than a raised mount .
Keep in mind with each wrap of Cable on the spool, it loses
its overall effectiveness to pull the load, So when looking at a
winch, see what the overall weight it is capable of pulling at
the final wrap on the spool . CM. My email is open

I have a receiver box on the front of my trailer. A old 8000 lb. Warn mounted to a homemade 2" square tube. With a snatch block will scoot anything I can haul 10000. But my wife bought a little 1500 lb winch at a yard sale. With a snatch block It will pull a rolling diesel pickup right on. She gave $5.

I must be the oddball, I have a two ton manual winch on mine. For once or twice a year I just crank.

I have a 12000 lb winch from Harbor Freight got on sale for $299 for my hydraulic tilt bed trailer, figured it'd last a little while. Its been 5 years and its still going strong.I've loaded some heavy stuff, usually use a snatch block as the winch runs a little fast, also would work better if I took about half the cable off it.If it goes bad I'll get another one like it.

What few times I have ever needed to drag something on my trailer the Harbor Freight 12K is a real bargain with single line in most cases.

I bought a 9000 lb Harbor Freight winch in 2007 and its still going strong today....The secret is to use
a snatch block and let it rest every 15-20 seconds on a medium-hard pull....I have watched people at
sales burn up winches by keeping on pulling when smoke is rolling from them..I tried to tell one guy that
but he didnt listen and ruined it.

I have a WARN 12K that cost me free. Okay, not quite. I had to trade a riding mower for it. The riding mower I got for free.
Uh, does that count?
Like has been said, if you desire your winch to last, always use it
(1) in short intervals with resting periods in between.
15 seconds on, 30 seconds off.
(2) with a snatch block.
That 12K winch is not 12K the entire length. That 12K rating is dependent upon the amount of cable rolls on the spool.
So if you desire to increase the strength of your winch, use that snatch block.
If you get a $20 new snatch block it will break on you. It might be light to carry but it won't last.
Also, if you actually do need to pull a 12K load, chances are your light weight truck, or what ever will get dragged all over the place
hooking up to a 12K weight. I used cinder blocks, all 4 tires to hold the lighter 3/4 ton truck in place. Then the snatch block and figure
that 12K can effectively double to 24K for a short distance.
If dong something that brave, stay clear of the cable. if something breaks, you have a lot of stored energy that is going to go somewhere.
Don't get in it's way.

And keep hands away from cable when pulling. Some guy near here a few years ago got his fingers under the cable, not good! You can rewind the cable nice when you are all done for the day. Geter done.
