Torsion Trailer Axles

How can you tell if Dexter Torsion Axles are worn out? Saw a pair on Facebook Marketplace for a couple hundred dollars. Seller said they are 5,000 pound axles.

I replaced a torsion axle on my snowmobile trailer 8 years ago due to the support frame being rusted out. At 12 years old and a lot of miles it still worked just fine.

The torsion axles on my dump trailer are wore out. They've sagged and have since rusted in place so they no longer cycle up and down even if you remove the weight.

I think that's the real test, if the axle still moves and has some springiness to it, it's still good. When they just flop, or even worse, don't move at all, they're shot. The rubber cannot be replaced, at least not in a typical shop, and the axle is usually rusted and fatigued to where it's not worth the expense of sending it back to the factory to be resprung.
