Anyone have 2015-2018 Chevy silverado or gmc with the factory brake controller having any issues with it not
working or a a message popping up on the cluster saying SERVICE TRAILER BRAKE SYSTEM? If so did you install aftermarket controller and pigtail? Help please Thanks

Do the brakes on the trailer work? Have you pulled the trailer with another truck. Is it a truck problem or a trailer problem. These systems tie into the ABS computer on the truck and they will detect a wiring problem, no ground or a grounded magnet on the trailer. My guess is, if you fix the trailer the problem will go away.

Owners of trailers I've used pull them frequently without issue.
I've borrowed these 2 trailers and each time I plug in the pigtail
it pops up service trailer brake system. All the lights and turn signals
work well just no brakes on either trailer.

my 2018 2500hd will do that. the trailer plug socket on the bumper is upside down. the trailer plug kind of drops a little and it looses contact with the brake terminal. really bad design.

My Dad's 2015 Chevy does it with no trailer connected. It is very annoying, but all the dealer's service writer will do is stare at his feet and shuffle around, "Welllllll... I don't know of any TSBs about that... Sounds like an electrical issue to me... Diagnosing those can take a lot of time and we'd have to charge you for every minute of it... It's going to be real expensive."

So he drives it and every few minutes it's "DING DING! Service Trailer Brakes!" Not to mention some a-hole dropped something on the hood and put a big dent in it.

Wash out the trailer plug on the truck with brake cleaner then thoroughly dry it out with compressed air. I have also seen moisture get in the back side of the plug and cause this. Worst case scenario in this situation is usually a new trailer connector and the harness side connector pigtail.

If it's only happening with a trailer plugged in, it's a 98 44/100 % chance the problem is in the trailer. If it doesn't matter if the trailer is hooked up or not, wash out the plug on the truck with brake cleaner and thoroughly dry it out. I have seen moisture get in the connector on the harness side of the connector and do this too.

I have not had any problems with my gmc 2016 3500, I would try cleaning the plug like other have said. if it still does it I look to the trailer and could be a bad ground but if I have problems as I hate to mess with a trailer and wiring have it checked by someone that works on them.
