School bus tractor hauler

The original subject was "Re: School bus tractor hauler".

Hey NYOlivers, you seem to know old school buses pretty well. Tell me something if you don't mind. I know where there is a full sized yellow school bus that a previous owner converted into a camper. He put 2 new AC units on the roof, a nice shower stall, fridge, stove, electric range, shelving, a master bedroom in the back, indoor/outdoor carpet throughout, and paneled the walls and painted the ceiling. He did a good job from what I can see. He then parked it near a river, which soon flooded, putting about 2' of water in the bus for about a week. The V-8 gas motor was completely submerged during that time. The current owner bought it right after the flood, about 2.5 years ago, and has done nothing to it ib the interim. He wants $800 for it. I don't necessarily care about trying to save the motor. I am mostly interested in parking it here on the farm and using it as a guest house for grandkids, etc. I would appreciate your thoughts on this..

$500.00 might would be about right, the AC should be alright, stove, maybe. The motor, transmission will be junk if it has water in it,rear end the same. And the thing might run with a gas tank and a battery.

You may want to get a subscription to Farm Show magazine. There are always school bus to equipment hauler plans and articles in it.

The bus was in 2' of water, or the water got up 2' into the interior of the bus?

If the water got up into the interior, I would be concerned about mold, black or otherwise. If not for the potential health issues, because I know some of you poo-poo those, then for the absolutely horrible stench.

Walter Bulter I am sorry that I did not respond to your post earlier. I have not checked this page on the forum in awhile and I have been very busy. Anyway to try and answer your question. Personally I would stay away from it. As someone already posted, mold would be the biggest concern. If the water sat inside for that long I would think it saturated the insulation between the wall panels which will cause corrosion and rust even faster than normal.
If you really want to go the school bus route, watch local auctions for school districts and municipalities. Most districts are auctioning off there old busses now instead of just trading them in when they are talen out of service. I hope this helps you out.
