John deere 960 field cultivator on trailer

Anyone ever do this? How rough is the tongue to take off and how well do they fit sideways once off? Looking at a 20ft one 220 miles away. Hoping to load it sideways, take off the tongue and go. Possible? Or still too wide?

I did it with a black machine planter. I took the tongue and the back row units off to make it fit on my trailer. I'm sure you'd have to take the harrow off the back along with the tongue to get it close to width.

It all depends on the measurements. Have to find out what each component measures, then start takin' it apart.

We bought this very nice Miller 12' offset some years back.



Took a quick look, called the dood, and did the deal. Most important part of the deal was his equipment availability for teardown. He had a place closeby, and towed it there, and took it apart before I showed up to get it. Loaded nicely on the trailer.





Came off ok.







Another time, we picked up a Hoeme plow, and 20' springtooth. This time around, the dood didn't have any close access to a compressor. We plopped the welding skid on the 1 ton (for lektricity) , and a portable compressor to run air tools. Took it apart in the guys field next to the highway. Took a while, so K'kins killed time confabbing with the dood's wife. It looked like a trash pile goin' down the road on the way home

All's ya need is a good lady that's patient enough to put up with the trip, and time needed.

Pay attention to rigging when loading/unloading......this can get you killed, or trash the equipment if it's not done right. Bind it down good for the trip, and check the binders on a regular basis in case it shifts......which it usually will, once you start moving. Trailers have torque on them at all times. Depends on the terrain. It probably has a twist on it when loading, and once you start moving, it takes the twist out, and stuff will be loose. Check that baby the minute you get on blacktop, or any level road.

And be absolutely sure to make pit stops when SHE WANTS. And feed her good, not crappy fast food.....a decent sit down place. It makes it easier to ask her to go the next time around.

All of those implements arrive new at the dealers un-assembled and packed in shipping crates or on pallets. The dealer then has one or two of his guys un-pack and assemble the machine. If it was put together, it can be taken apart.

Depending on the folded width you can just load it like it is and go with the permits. If not over 12 wide folded no escort needed. Just permits. If you just tow it behind a pickup no permit needed in most cases. I would do it that way and for get loading it. 220 miles is only 10 hours or less. Take a grease gun for the wheels and go. I pulled a 25 foot Glencoe soil finished home with a pickup about 80 miles. It is about 12 wide no permits just flashers on. Took about 3-4 hours.

I have done similar things more than once. Had more than one hair-raising experience also. I have pulled 80 and 100 foot grain augers with my truck for 60 to 80 miles and actually experienced traffic stacking up behind me, with at least 2 cars following so close that they were actually UNDER the auger.
