any trailer manufacturers to avoid?

I was looking around in '06 for a trailer, before losing employment and putting it on the back burner. I found most prices were fairly close when comparing apples to apples. What surprised me was the odd fire sale price, where the price was so much lower that I couldn't see how the manufacturer could be using similar quality materials. Has anyone seen poor workmanship/materials from a trailer company?

I agree with Rusty, look it over. I won't name names but there is a large manufacturer in the southeast that has been around quite some time but builds junk. I know of new trailer that had the gooseneck break off on the first usage. Upon inspection most of the crossmembers underneath were tacked in place and never welded. Nothing was really welded that well. Wiring is ran through torch cut holes with no gormet or protection, and so forth. Just crawl around under what you are looking at before you buy it.

I popped in to look at some trailers today. Tilt decks, deck-overs, but no plain 18ft deck without beavertail. Went inside to ask for some literature, and to see what price they wanted for their standard 18 ft equipment trailer. No such animal! Had to give him my basic specs:
18 ft flat deck, no beavertail, pressure treated
brakes on both axles, minimum 5k each
minimum 10 ply 235-R16 tires
- He was going to contact the company to find out if they do custom spec orders. Does anyone see this as a special order? Seems pretty standard to me (unless there are that many people that just have to have one of those tilt decks or a beavertail)
Thoughts?

Get one of the Corn Pro trailers that has a convertable beavertail. You pull 2 pins and can make it a flat deck for loading docks. Very neat feature and strong too.

18' are stocked at a local landscape supplyer these are brakes on one axle, 2 3500# axles so would be lighter than what you want
search on the internet to see what you can find some manufactors build to your needs as cheap or cheaper than the dealers lot

If that trailer has 2 axles, then it is required by law to have brakes on both of those axles. The dealer or the manufacturer cannot legally sell any trailer that does NOT have brakes on all axles. The exception might be a small, single axle trailer of a size that is suited for a golf cart or similar.

I'm not sure if the law requires brakes on both axles up here - I just know I want brakes on both axles.

Rusty,I'am not in disagreement with you,but they don't have to put brakes on both axles,WHAT they do is put smaller-lighter Coupler on with one brake axle and sell it cheaper and LET BUYER BEWARE.I'am still seeing a lot of those for sale.If the cust.gets caught then the dealer just says look at the coupler, the cust.put more load on then he should have. Very-Very dirty pool but it clears the dealer and Mfg.

In our neck of the woods a 18 ft. trailer is a little odd, although I do have one. Most of them are either 16 or 20 ft. Axles with electric brakes, for the most part are 3500#-with 5 lug Wheel-6000# with 6 lug wheel and 7000# with 8 lug wheel. Take these figures x 2 and that gives you the gross weight rating of the trailer, if you have 2 axles.Everyone around here seems to want a 25- 35 foot gooseneck trailer, just not much demand for the shorter ones any more.

One thing that a lot of people overlook when buying a trailer is the wiring. One builder uses 16ga.wire for electric brakes, runs the wires through holes cut through the frame with a torch and uses no grommets. They also use very cheap lighting. Check the tires also, some of them are coming from China now. Some of the oldest names in trailers are not the best built, I wonder how they have survived as long as they have.

Yes, I have seen a few very shoddilly built trailers. Things like mating steel parts that were cut too short, or cut crooked, so that they had to lay a bolt into the gap and then weld the bolt in place. I've also seen where for some reason or another a butt joint weld was started but never finished, leaving about 4 inches that is not welded. There a couple of brands of trailers that I will never even consider, and one of them is a major trailer builder with sales over most of the united states. Your best bet is to thoroughly inspect the trailer before you buy it, even if it is a well known brand with a good reputation.
