I got ripped off by the state. Probally the toll booth workers scaming...

Got on with my F150 and bumper hich Trailer at I69 (Angola) and went to to the Elkhart west (19) exit. The attendent handed me a ticket and off I went. I looked at the chart and figured I owed $1.75. Well when I got to the exit I am told I owe $5.35.

She points out that the ticket was out of date and printed on 11-19-07. No amount of protest made any difference. She gave me some cock-and-bull story about how because of toll plaza construction issues, this or that does not work right... That I was given the wrong class ticket etc. etc. etc. All B.S.

Well I did double check on the IN toll road website. I was deffienenly a class two vehicle: Class 2 Vehicles (2 Axle, 4 Tire Vehicle, with trailer) and the toll should have been the $1.75.

Now my bottom line can handle this $3.00 over charge. I post it here to hopefully keep someone else from getting ripped off.

Watch your tickets, make sure they are in date and watch for the gov. theives working the toll plazas in Indiana.

Jeff

P.s. this was the firt time I've ever been on I-80 in IN.

Jeff,

You are calssified as 4 axles so the toll is $5.50 from Angola to Elkhart West.

Jim

As a minor point of order, the Kansas Turnpike is not I35 all the way, only from Oklahoma to Emporia, KS. It is part of I70 from Topeka to Kansas City but it pre-dates the interstate system and was built without interstate money. It is self-supporting by fees. Even though it is maintained well and improved regularly it still makes money. The state keeps trying to raid the turnpike funds for other boondoggles but the quasi-private turnpike authority has successfully fought them off.

There is no excuse for vehicle class to be ambiguous. Kansas has signs with little silouette drawings to illustrate the various combinations of vehicles and trailers to make the class clear for everyone. If you weren't stolen from you at least sound like the victim of incompetent or sloppy work.

The IN Toll Road was handed over by lease to an Austrailian Firm last year. You musta missed the big whoop-te-do about that and how 83% of the state disagreed with the suggestion and Ole Mitch did it anyway. They are installing the I-Pass on the west end but not on the east end. They are getting overwhelmed with unpaid tolls on the east end because most expect the I-Pass to work everywhere. They have raised the rates 2 times since the takeover. All I can say is that you are not alone!
The way it was originally supposed to work, is that once the bonds were paid off from building the road, it would be a freeway like I69. Not its not going to happen for at least 75 years.

Why or How did I-80 get built in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska and not be a toll road? The States got Federal money to build and maintain the Highways, so what did Indiana do with there share? I understand Pennsylvanias' turnpike being toll cause it was built in the thirties, but this modern toll business floors me. Even Kansas has I-35 as a toll road!

hang on to your socks if that idiot from chicago we have for governor gets his way the interstate highways and lootery (it is a scam) will be turned over to furin firms. then ALL of interstate highways will be toll roads. he is such a big crook the dems even hate him. his latest idea is to tax rest of state to keep chicago transist (buses and trains) system running.

Just a few samples of where the interstates "camped onto" existing toll roads, rather than building new parellel roads. High mileage users such as trucks& busses have to keep track of tolls paid & get credit against their fuel taxes. IIRC,high mileage car drivers can do the same, but it isn't worth the paperwork.
I-80 across In & Oh follows the old Indiana Toll Road & Ohio Turnpike, built before the National Defense & Interstate Highway System was formed. I-80 in Il was a new road built by the Interstate system. In Il, I-90 follows the old Il Northwest Toll Road from Chicago to Beloit, I-94 follows the old Tri-State north to Kenosha. In Ks, I-35 from the Ok line to Emporia, 335 to Topeka, then 70 to Kansas City follow the old Kansas Turnpike. I-35 from Emporia to K.C. is free. In Ok, I-40 follows the old Oklahoma Turnpike. Clear as mud, but it covers the ground.

You (or someone) voted for politicians that spend money on social programs and other "Entitlements" and that money has to come from somewhere. They (the politicians) steal the money from gas tax revenues, etc and then whine that there is no more money for the roads. Pretty soon, you have toll roads generating huge profits for foriegn companies!

I say kick out the (insert party name of choice)!

I agree with you. There is talk of toll roads here in Alabama. The way I see it we are already paying gas taxes for roads and with toll roads private investers own them. It's just another form of a tax that the politicians get out of being responsible for. The second point is these companies will probally kick in big bucks to the politicians campaign coffers where your everyday taxpayer don't. I think that's why there's such a big push to do it from the politicians standpoint.
