Hello,

I took my oil pan off to inspect my rods. In the process of removing the oil pan, a 3/8" pipe with threads on one end fell off somewhere near the back of the pan towards the driver seat. I'm not sure if it's function, but I want to put it back in the correct spot. I believe it's supposed to screw into a port near the wish bone A-frame ball joint bracket. However, it doesn't screw in easily and feels like I could cross thread it if I put much more on it. So my question is whether this is the correct location? Also, if so, how far do the threads need to screw in? I'll try attaching an image that shows where I think it goes. Not sure if it will show up. The only other thing I can think of is that it may be a housing for the dip stick... but there is no threads that I can tell where the dip stick comes in.

This is a IH 300U. I believe this is a 1957.

Yeah, I agree. Bolts shaking out is exactly why I ended up having to drop the pan. The bolts holding the wishbone came out and cause the pan to get dented upward into one of the rods. Putting things back together now. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I would put a little hardening pipe sealant, blue Loctite or #2 Permatex on the threads to make sure it doesn't shake out of place again without having to tighten it really tight.

It's simple insurance with no down side, IMHO.

Thank you for the reply and reference. Looks like that's it. So the question is if I have it in the right spot and if it should be threaded in until there are no more threads left on the pipe? Just wondering if it needs a certain amount of clearance from the bottom of the pan. Any idea of it's function?

It is to be moderately tight in its threads. No need to put sealant on the threads, I believe it connects to the oil filter drain hole in the oil filter bracket. I think it allows the bypass filter output to enter the oil pan without dribbling down the pan gasket. Jim
