refrigerator/freezer mystery

Our freezer top refrigerator suddenly produces water in the refrigerator top stuff, eventually leaking onto the floor below. We keep no ice or bottles of water in the freezer. I assume something has happened to the defrost cycle and the defrost product doesn't disappear as in the past. But what should I look for?

The pipe that drains the water to the pan under the fridge is plugged. Blow it empty from the bottom of fridge and it will be fixed.

They are, but the flavor is a bit off.

Just for science I've defrosted and cooked several way-out-of-date things from my parents' freezer since they passed. Edible in a pinch, but that's about all you can say.

If you want to speed up the defrost process you can use a hair dryer. Remove the back interior plate of the freezer to gain access to the coils and drain tube.

Model numbers etc are useless nowadays, or eighteen years ago. Most makes come out from the same factory. Perhaps someone will recognize it from a photo from inside the empty freezer?

This is a 2005 GE model:GTS18KPWRWW
and the serial # is VL515485

The fan is free and located at the rear near the floor with a dry, scuzzy pan to catch upper water. The freezer and refrigerator control is in the top of the refrigerator with a control for the the freezer and one for the refrigerator. Curiously there a bit of printing I cannot make out yet between the two controls and underneath where the controls exist, there is a hole big enough to let in a finger to touch something, maybe a screw. Maybe a rotary knob fell off that was to control something else? will have to get better light and a mirror to see what that might be.

I think I will have to get some ice chests and blue ice and unload the top freezer and maybe unplug the darned thing for awhile. Thanks everyone, Leo nard.

WE had a samsung where the freezer drain hole froze closed and the fix was a small metal tab (sold on e bay) that dipped down (transferred just enough heat) into the drain area to keep it from freezing.. .

Ive found many answers on You Tube do a search on it for your make and model and problem you may find the answer

To prevent drain freezing I hung a short wire off the defrost heating element that dangled down into the drain.

When your freezer defrosts, water drips into a pan under the freezer coils and then drains through a hose into a pan under the fridge. If you pull out the bottom drain pan it's probably bone dry. This is usually caused by a plugged drain hose.

Empty the freezer and remove the plastic panels inside. I'll bet you'll find the freezer coils are packed full of ice. Let it defrost and remove all the ice. DON'T try to pick at the ice with a sharp tool! Once it's all defrosted you should be able to access the drain under the coils and clear the blockage. There's probably some sort of valve in the drain hose to keep air out and that's likely where it's plugged. In the case of our fridge, I couldn't clear the plugged hose from above and I had to run a piece of wire up from the bottom of the refrigerator. I found that 14 guage insulated electrical wire worked for this. Once you have the blockage cleared out, flush the hose with Clorox.

freezer drain plugged or frozen. just went through that problem. you can take freezer half apart to get to drain, or just unplug for day or so. i've heard of the drain tube duckbill valve being plugged as well.

Our side-by-side fridge/freezer was dribbling water out onto the kitchen floor. The defrost drain was iced/plugged. I got the drain thawed/open and it stopped the floor wetting. First problem in about 15 years. Another 15 years and it will be someone else's problem. I'm 74.

Many years ago the old Kenmore refrigerator did that. The tech. said it was the timer for the defrost cycle. I think it stuck in 'defrost'. he replaced it and it was good for quite a few more years.

Of course, check the obvious things. If yours has an ice maker, make sure the supply line doesn't have a hole in it. I am also thinking the one we have now has external drain tubing from the top down to the evap. tray underneath.

First thing to do is check the gasket around the freezer door and push it back in the track if has come out, could be as simple as that. Second thing you can do is check the bottom drain to make sure it is not plugged and while their make sure the fan is spinning and also clean the coils if dirty.

Underneath the refrigerator there should be a drain hose that empties into a catch pan. The pan should be positioned so the condenser fan blows across the pan to evaporate the water between defrost cycles.

If the hose is not draining into the pan the defrost water will go on the floor.

If the pan is overflowing there is too much ice forming on the freezer coils caused by a bad door seal or the doors being left open, as in something blocking the door, or out of level causing them to not self close fully.

If the problem is the timer it is just behind the front kick panel and will have a slot or knob to turn it to go from run to defrost so if you turn it and things change the timer maybe going bad or sticking

Defrosted the refrigerator/freezer. Removed ice in freezer, cleaned both sections. But am seeing black goo in the tiny gap under back freezer panel, but cannot figure how get the somewhat loose panel out to inspect/clean that goo out to the space under what must the freezer coils. There is a light mounted to that panel and the whole works wiggles a bit. On the left side there is knob-like restraint on the left wall that has a curious two slots in the cap like a wanna-be un-grounded plug in? Cannot tell if the knob unscrews..afraid to use pliers on it. Don't know if the two little slots are there for a special tool.

I got the drain tube unplugged, tested it with a bit water which showed up down in the pan! Found two hard to see screws lurking in the cover at the center of the freezer rear, which released the whole rear panel...what a scuzzy mess! Will see if it runs tonight and hopefully in the morning I can help my wife put only stuff we want back into that handy freezer and then work with her on defrosting the other...a bottom type freezer, may find old stuff in there we do not recognize! Good night and thanks. Leo
