I have a small chipper shredder with a 3hp briggs that is bad. Can't find one but found a 2hp. I wonder if it would work?

another option is HF Predator line... they match up to BS shaft and mount sizes/holes. I've been using them for years as my BS engines die... they are Honda Clones and are dependable.. Most small hp are less than 200 bucks and I get 5-6 years out of them.
Starts on the second pull and makes my shoulders happy..

The 2hp has same crank diameter and length and is the same bolt pattern and all. I know on some old engines 2 different hp engines were exactly the same. What made the higher hp one was because it was higher rpm. The 5hp is physically larger, I could make it work but the crank diameter on the one I have is larger and that won't work. Probably will rub you the wrong way, me too, but check the price of used equipment before buying an engine. People tire of tripping over unused equipment and just want to get rid of it.

Things to look at.

Spacing for the base plate holes. The bolt holes will need to match up.

Crank shaft. Will need to be the same height and the same diameter. Personally I would look into a 5 hp engine. On chippers it is always better to up in power rather than down if possible. Plus 5 hp engines and parts are much easier to find than 2, 3 and 4 hp ones.
