I have always liked the old Abernathy that was attached to my father's workbench. It may be from the Chicago school where my grandfather taught manual arts in the around 1915 -20. It has withstood no end of abuse and is still parallel and working perfectly. I have rarely run across one that I liked as much. The bench is described here: Abernathy Roller Nut Vise

Thank you for your responses. I have written down manufacturer names and now know what to look for.

I love my Jaw-horse. It's like a portable vice one can take anywhere.

Harbor Freight came out with a new line of vises called Doyle. I bought a mechanic's vise and for the money it's pretty good. I'm sure there's better quality one's out there but the Doyle seems to be the best value. I don't have any experience with the woodworking vise but I would be willing to give it a try. The other option is looking for an older vise on Ebay or at auction somewhere.

Here it is. $70 and it seems to get good reviews. Third Party Image

I was given a jaw-horse.
I put wheels on it. Handy.
I don't do a lot of woodworking anymore.

Yost, Jorgensen, Rockler and Wilton are some top names in woodworking vices. There are different types, sizes and plenty of knockoffs available. Check Harbor Freight and Northern Tool.

I've had a Craftsman vice like this one since the 1970's. I'm still happy with it.
