Enlighten me on the specific purpose for these grouser things on the feet of my extension ladder. They would help keep the foot from slipping but they must have been for a specific use somewhere. Are they supposed to spin? Mine do not. Thanks, Michael

Part of our ladder safety training at work is an OSHA statistic that above eleven feet, a fall from a ladder results in 50/50 WHETHER YOU SURVIVE! Not just sustain injury, but live or die. A coworker has rods in his spine from a fall from a ladder at home, permanently cause him pain. They are no joke, and the OP would do well to understand his ladder's features, it's good he asked. I have gotten rid of all but one old wooden ladders around here, and that one is next to go!

It's my understanding that type ladder is for Arborists. The spurs are there to help the ladder not slip off a round tree trunk.

I'd say that's the top end to allow it to slide up the wall when extending it and keep it from sliding sideways. Still will leave some marks.

I wouldn't want them to spin!

Looks like they are just supposed to bite in and hold it from slipping.

I had an extension ladder slide out from under me on a greasy concrete floor! Not fun!

Its just that... to bite in and keep the ladder from sliding. Common on commercial ladders, at least the ones I have been around. Can also have a toggle rubber foot that will swing down or swing up, to expose this bottom.

This one had the rubber feet, they didn't hold!

That incident could/should have been really bad. I was working by myself, doors locked, no one would have found me until Monday morning. When I fell, I came down on the sharp corner of a steel work table. It hurt but I was not injured. That night when I took my leather belt off, there was a deep gouge in the belt, directly over my spine where it caught the corner of the table! A half inch higher or lower, I would have been seriously injured!

Are you sure that is the foot of the ladder? I've seen wheels like that on the top of the bottom section of the ladder, never on the feet.

Is it a half or a quarter of what used to be a folding ladder?
