I got this drill bit with some other stuff at an auction a while back.
It's a big one. 1 5/8in dia and nearly 29in long. #4 morse taper - made by Cleveland Twist Drill Co.
I made a hanger for it this morning and put it above the furnace door in my shop office.
Had no way to use it before. Now it'll serve as an ornament.

My first thought was not to slam the door below the bit. My second thought was COOL looking piece of art. Wish I had one.

Since you're on the topic I'll add this. I worked in a job shop, when I needed to hog out a bigger hole to get started I used this 1.875 four fluted drill. I made a clamp for it to rest on the tool holder to take the torque. I see I have the clamp on backwards.

1-5/8 is not that big. the length is a bit longer than common. There are some bits here if I knew where they are would be in the 2 inch range I believe. Old press repair shop my one brother had had several big drills like that not so long.

I ran one like that years ago, jokers loved to come up behind you when you were tapping a hole and crunch a plastic coffee cup behind your head.

years ago i was looking for a small lathe for my shop. a friend knew a retired machinist that also had a shop at home and was thinning out the herd. i bought the lathe and he gave me quite a bit of tooling. he had the radial drill for sale too. at the time i didnt have the cash for it. about 6 months later he called and said i still have your drill. hooked up the trailer and headed over. took us half a day to load it with winches and come a longs. weighs about 7k its a 3ph but he has a vfd so i can run it on 220 single ph. he gave me quite a few drill bits to go with it too.

I worked in a paper mill machine shop for 30 years and we had drills up to 3 inch and a big radial arm drill. Also had the drill grinder to sharpen them.
