Matco tools

Are they any good these days?

Reason for asking. A company distributor stopped by the shop yesterday and dropped off a catalog and a few other goodies. We talked awhile and he said that he is wanting to establish a route to the include lesser known shops and places outside of the norm. Also stated that he would be back in two weeks with his truck.

Is Matco on par with MAC and Snapon or are they just a Harbor Freight on wheels?

Matco tools are on par with Mac and snap on. they are slightly less spendy than snap on. Cornwell also sells quality tools.

In my opinion Matco is right there with Snap-On and Mac. Matco truck used to stop here but then he
retired and no one took over from there. Mac doesn't have anyone in this area either anymore but we
do have a Cornwell truck in the area.

Do not buy Matco tools off the truck.
Matco just brands tools, hand tools
included. Everything on the truck is
available in other places for a fraction
of the Matco price. Look up MrSubaru on
YouTube, he exposes the manufacturer of
Matco's tools and shows where to get them
without the brand for less.

I have a set of MAC wrenches, and a set of Matco wrenches. If they didn't have the names stamped into them, you can't tell them apart, BUT;
they are also nearly 40 years old, so I can't vouch for their current quality. MAC man was at my neighbors motorcycle shop a few days ago,
so I replaced two metric wrenches I was missing, they look nothing like my originals(I don't like them).

Yup Cornwell is a good tool. I've used a couple and they took the same working as the rest of the better name tools. I like Proto but they have been soaked up with Stanley just like Challenger the cheap line of Proto and Mac tools. Not sure if they are as good now as they were before the Stanley conglomerate happened. Wright is another good brand right up with Snap on or the rest of them. I've got a fairly complete set of Wright 1 inch drive impact sockets. Got them fron a discount store that buys out store closing inventory. I picked out a set at that time and din't get back right away so missed out on the rest of them.

As far as I know they are premium, pro quality tools.

But buying off the truck is a very expensive way to get them!

Those trucks that come around make their money by charging above and beyond list price. They justify it
by allowing the local mechanics to buy on time, putting down a down payment, taking possession of the
tools, then paying it out every week or whenever the truck comes back around. The high price is a hidden
interest payment, and covers loses of those who leave and never finish paying.

Trouble is, buying with cash, you still pay those charges!

When we started our tire shop in 1986, I went to a consignment auction and bought a Matco 3 ton floor jack. 15 years later I had to buy new wheels for it. Rolling it around on rough concrete, the wheels actually wore out. Then couple years later we were broken into and it was stollen. The jacks we replaced it with were no where near as good.

[b:4976e7e295]Sprint 6[/b:4976e7e295] . Thank you. I had only heard of Matco tools from seeing banners and booths etc set up at racing events. But have never known anyone who owns anything sold by them.

After some digging. I have about came to the conclusion that they're just a harbor freight gone mobil.

I don't know how the Matco tools being sold now are, but I have several Matco tools that I bought 20 years ago that are quality tools. The biggest Matco tool I have is a 3/4 inch drive torque wrench which has been a great tool. Have a set of crow foot sockets and some other smaller tools that have been no problem.

Don't know about the new ones but old ones were very good. Problem we have in my area is many of
these companies do not have a truck or one does not last long. Thus leaving you with no service or
warrantee.
