Allen wrenches

I bought this set of allen wrenches at an auction a week ago. It was cheap - maybe because it was missing the 3/16 size.
So I went online to see about replacing the missing one.
Amazon had replacement sizes so I bought the one I needed. Just got it yesterday.
I just looked and the tool store that everyone here loves has a similar Complete set for $8.
Ecklind wants $43 for theirs.
I have about $15 in this set now
I doubt the Ecklinds are 5 times better than the cheap ones.
But I'm happy to own yet another tool from a good American company.

I've used that style a few times.

Learned real quick when breaking loose a really tight bolt, the gap in the handle will open up, then snap shut on whatever part of your hand happens to be pressing into it!

It only took once to be aware of it!

I consider those speed wrenches for after it is loose or before final torque. The long end of a regular Allen wrench is for breaking it loose and torquing.

I have a set like that, and they're handy, but for high torque I use a regular L wrench. My preferred brand is Bondhus, made in Monticello MN! They are available with a ball end on the long arm.

Actually there is a great deal of variance in Allen wrench quality . The biggest lie on the internet is everything Is all made in one factory and all the same

If I can get them in due to room I prefer the socket type you can get a better turn on them with longer handles if needed for bigger Allen screws. I also basically hat Allen screws and bolts. IF I can't get a regular hex head bolt for the job I will see what it needs to do so if I can.

Those aren't bad for light duty use, and probably are worth 5 times as much as the ones from HF, same with the Bondus Ball Drivers. I have them all, but when I really need to tighten or loosen something with serious torque and a cheater pipe I go for my old Unbrako allen wrenches, I have some that I'm sure are at least 50 years old all the way through 2 that have been in daily use and they are hands down the best ever made. The new Unbrako wrenches are made in China and basically junk.

When I was working I was a Pressman for a large printing Co. and one day was working on one of the printing units, up to my butt in ink & grease all over, told this new kid to go to my tool box and get me a 1/4 Allen wrench, he was gone for quite a while and came back with a 12 in. Cresent which was way down in bottom of box. always remember those funny things that happened 30 years ago. gene
