Do you turly want a root rake or just something to clean up the surface of twigs and such. They are not the same thing and root rakes are heavy with big iron for them. Flat stock would not be my choice for either.

I couldn't find a decent one that didn't cost an absolute fortune . Most were from that place were they make things from tin foil and spit and with beautiful red powder coat that lasts two months .

I ended up making one myself from heavy salvaged angle iron and car leaf springs . It works really well and is also strong enough to use as a light cultivator .

Years ago I paid $300 for the rake at RK. Probably 2x that cost now.

I use it all the time to pick up sticks after cutting down a tree. Upside, it doesn't damage the lawn.

I have used it to level gravel in the driveway.
I can see what is going on and unlike most 3 pt hitches, I can apply down pressure.
I'm not driving over sticks, I'm pushing sticks.

I wouldn't attempt to remove roots. That would take something more serious to do.

I had found a few sets of light car leaf springs Barts Dad . They each had a centre hole for a locating pin in the middle . I had enough leaves to cut the excess of each leaf ,leaving one side and hole to attach to the frame .
In hindsight I should have left the springs whole so that they could be unbolted and rotated . One end kept flat for stick raking , the other pointed for scarifying , or loosening gravel on the track .
