Odd roadside paint brush

I found this nice Purdy brush last year, been using it. Was in better shape when I found it on the road.

Any idea why the notches? Something painters do? Mark of ownership, secret code?

Or just random notches? Still a nice brush, needs a good cleaning.

It looks like a sash cutter brush , used mostly on window frames . I've seen those notches before , too deep for ID marks . They are used to support the brush upright in a tin of solvent so the bristles don't bend . A painter's scraper is pushed into the notch that suits the fluid level in the tin , the scraper handle hangs over the edge and counterbalances the brush's weight .

That makes sense. Different notches for different levels. Thank you, now I can get a good night's sleep again!
