What vise would you recommend for a somewhat serious home woodworking shop?

An Australian made ' DAWN' ten inch quick release wood worker's under bench vyse is probably one of the best available in the world.
Of course I am biased , I have two , an eight and a ten inch that I've used for forty odd years . They are strong , easy to use and the jaws remain parallel.
They may be available in the US. , if they are an older second hand one made before 1990 would be of peak quality .

Are you talking about a face vise or end vise? If you are looking at a face vise I would look at Harbor Freights new one. I bought a new Doyle brand bench vise and for the money it's not to bad. I haven't seen the new woodworking vise they came out with but if it's anything like the bench vise I would be willing to give it a try. Other than that look for an older made woodworking vise at an auction. For an end vise it seems Sjobergs makes the best but you will pay dearly for that one.

Much as I avoid HF their vise is probably a good fit for me.
