Harbor Freight syphon tool, should work?

Good afternoon, all: I have a need to empty the gas tank on my 1945 Dodge pickup, so I can remove the tank. I got a manual syphon device from Harbor Freight several years ago. It has a cylindrical body, about 6 or 8 inches long, about 1-1/2 inch diameter, and a plastic hose on each end about 4 ft long each. Has anyone used one of these Harbor Freight devices to empty a tank? I am interested in two thing: SAFETY, and NO HEAVY LIFTING. Replies appreciated!

I have one. It would work for that purpose but repeated use in gas the gas would eat up the seals in it. If you used a long enough hose you could use the pump to get it started and the rest would siphon out.

Use it and then throw it away as it likely won't work next time. As cheap as they are I would consider it
disposable. Order a new one to replace it so you have one if the need arises again.

all i would have done is get a chunk of 3/8 or 5/8 hose and just syphon it out that way. done that many times. perfectly safe and the tank
will be just as empty.

I used the Harbor Freight tool you reference to drain 30 gallons of gasoline from my F250 tank prior to replacing the fuel pump. It's slow
because the hoses are small. Took longer to drain the tank than it did to drop the tank. It actually did a good job. Probably less than a
quart of gas left in the tank when I dropped it. I had no safety concerns. As others noted, plan on using it once and throwing the pump away.

I use a sponge type play toy bouncy ball with a big enough hose thru it to go thru the unleaded tank hole with flapper.I
About five feet either side of ball.
Then another small and short hose thru the ball.

When I was a kid that hose was called an Oklahoma credit card.

I've done that many times to get gasoline for the lawnmower, garden tiller, etc. when I didn't want to make a trip to town.

Work a piece of 3/8 gas line into the tank use a rag and
air line to pressurize the tank. Works every time. When I
started my 69 Camaro after setting for 20 years I
unhooked the gas line and pressurized the tank to
remove the old gas. Poured some gas down the Holly and
the damm thing started right up. The carb didnt even
leak.
