I used these pieces,

to make this crank,

to raise and lower the head on my drill press.

I sure wish I had a tig welder...

Biggest problem with TIG is the crazy high cost to practice to get good. Figure in the cost of a couple Tungstens, a dedicated grinding wheel for your bench grinder to sharpen tungstens, the shielding gas, the welding wire is more expensive, Just because it's Tig wire. And because you will run the tig longer you might as well get the water cooled torch and the water cooler system. I bought a Miller Dynasty 200 welder and SON played with it enough to stick two pieces of aluminum together but the air cooled torch got scalding hot, so I spent another $1000 for a water cooler and water cooled torch, I got a wireless foot pedal while I had my credit card out. If it was Me, I'd arc weld or Mig weld it and grind away anything that didn't look pretty enough to suit me. I bought a 5# box of 1/16 6013 welding rod years ago, I can arc weld thinner steel by far than I can MIG. I welded the floor of my small cart back down, it was .040 thk steel.

Stevieb and Janicholson,
The square bushing is just a light press fit into the outer tube. So I champhered the outer tube back so the braze would tie the outer tube, the square bushing And the handle together - like a 100% penetration weld.
I would have done the same with what ever method I used.
I'm sure this is strong but tig welding is such a precise way to join or fill small parts without all the excess heat from brazing. And it just looks cool.
Not that I could make welds like these I grabbed off the net but it would be fun to practice...
Thanks to all for the nice replys.

TIG would probably look nicer (I like your braze job) but the brass pulled into that butt seam is stronger than an outside TIG weld, unless you chamfered it out and filled it back up with weld. I would have chamfered it out and MIGed it together - and my TIG is setting right beside the MIG, all gassed up and ready to weld. steve
