Wondering what it might be. About 14 inches wide with a roller and a blade the width of the platform.

I want to know too, I've had it for years but just came across it recently.
 

The butcher shop down the road from where we lived as children had a similar thing on the counter . The heavy roll of white wrapping paper sat on the roll , was pulled out and cut on the blade . The paper was then wrapped around the meat on the flat plate .
 
That was my thought also. We had
something similar in our old hardware
store with brown wrapping paper.
 
If the blade is designed to take a thin slice, Kinda like a Cabbage shredder, it is a leather splitter. Jim
 
found a website with machinery items patented on that date - this one was not included in their listings... whats that knob on the side do?
