Weather station

(quoted from post at 11:54:14 06/12/22) I have an older Accurite that has been
good but starting to develop issues. I'm
thinking of an upgrade. Does anyone have
one they would recommend?

The Accurite indoor/outdoor thermometer I bought many years ago was starting to have issues. So I went shopping for a replacement. The exact model I had was discontinued and replaced with a new, upgraded model so that is what I bought. Accurite brand, working just fine now for over one year. Maybe 2 years?

I got a Vantage VUE a couple years ago.

It's done good so far, the controls are a little difficult to navigate, it does a lot of things I haven't figured out how to access yet.

My biggest problem is not having a good unobstructed place to mount it. I put it about 25 ft up, but it's still blocked by trees.

One thing I did find out after I bought it, they make dozens of models. The only ones you see advertised on Amazon and Ebay are the entry level, cheapest ones made. Once you get into the product line, the sky is the limit as far what level of accuracy and function you want. They do get expensive! Beyond my needs, the cheap one is fine with me.

With our remote location and former lack of decent internet, I have found websites that give me information I could never get from even the best weather station that I still couldn't afford. Learned long ago the vast information available on aircraft sites, as weather is vastly important when you're in the sky. So one of my favorite sites is https://www.radar-live.com/p/atmospheric-pressure.html, and then the link on the map to windy.com and I can see not only wind speed, but also exact wind direction. Can pull up fires. Storms, forecasts that are more accurate than NOAA Weather Radio. Radar with all the bells and whistles. And can do it on the PC or the wife's phone. So I gave up wishing for a fancy, new weather station. If there's anything I can't learn from what I have, I really don't care to know about it. But one thing's for sure, when the weather decides to get dangerous and there are Severe thunderstorm warnings or worse, I can keep my handheld scanner on set to Alert, and if anything comes up, it goes off. One time it was me that saw the tornado first and called it in. Took them about 15 minutes to verify and page it out, by then there was a 2nd tornado.

Anything by Davis in my opinion. I have a Davis Vantage Pro and it works great. This is the first home weather station that I have had that has a rain gauge that really works. The biggest issue with any weather station is placement. If you want the wind speed and direction to be accurate the station has to be placed correctly. I have mine at 20' but it is still too close to surrounding trees and that affects accuracy. I have mi system linked to the Weather Underground weather data server and I upload my data to their network. I also have an app on my phone that allows me to check the weather at home from anywhere. Yes, I'm a weather geek and proud of it.

Davis Vantage Pro 2 with ethernet option on it.. SO it does not tie up my computer in reporting to wx bearu.

Weather Underground is a www site that has source information stations all over. I don't have one but apparently you just ask and
they come out and set you up. There are 3 around me within a 3-4 mile radius. It contains detailed current weather, hourly
forecasts, active radar to watch storms approaching, rainfall totals, and 10 day forecasts that are very accurate......all for FREE!

regon Scientific is one of the leaders in that industry.

I have a Davis Vantage Vue transmitter along the edge of one of my fields. Unfortunately the internal electronics is not quite weatherproofed enough and eventually they start to misbehave on humid or rainy days; either the rain gauge or the humidity gauge gives spurious readings. I tend to get about 5 years out of their transmitters.

I'll confirm Davis weather stations are great but the one I really like is the Tempest weather station. Tempest is IMO a more technologically advanced station with the ability to share weather info within it's own station network, or you can share it with anyone you choose. Plus if you want, to share weather info with the National Mesonet network you make some money back. Pay attention to the features and how they operate. Some of these stations (Tempest incl) operate through a smartphone/app, which is a good thing unless you don't use a smartphone.
