Computer question, it's a tool, right?

Old router died, got a new one that has 2 "antennas" so I have great coverage. BUT! My laptop keeps dropping the connection even though it shows as being connected on the icon thing. If I disconnect and reconnect, everything works again. I imagine it's a setting, but which one? Any ideas? Windows 10 machine.

I would look for a software upgrade or driver for your specific router.
Do you have any other devices that connect to the router and do they
work ok?
Dave

Unplug the power from the router for a minute or two, and then plug it back in. Occasionally I have to do the same thing.

I agree with power down and reboot both the laptop and router. If you have an older laptop, connect it to the 2.4 g instead of the 5G. My
old laptop keeps dropping out on 5g but hangs in there on the 2.4 and it is only about 6 ft away from the router.

If you use windoze that is a known problem with some hardware. When I was a Oracle database certified pro we treated windoze as a virus. Google is your friend and there are many forum posts about dropped wireless at random times. There are a jillion fixes as well so you have to just keep trying one then the other.

I was having the same issue. Sometimes on bootup it would also fail to auto-connect. More than that my download speed was about 10% of what it should have been. Thought maybe
it was the hard drive so cloned it to another; same issue. Finally saved all my documents on a thumb drive and re-formatted then reloaded my original copy of win 10.
Everything working as it should now. Thinking something must have corrupted my copy even though I did multiple virus scans and registry cleanups.

Mine does that. Still works on the desktop when it happens, but that's hooked up with a cable. I have to unplug the power to the
router for a minute, then it works.

No WiFi, no problem
Turn the mobile hotspot on your smartphone.
I use my phone when the Internet is down..

You might have dirty power coming into the premises. I am going by five year old information here so the problem we had might be resolved by now with the new wifi units. Our routers were very sensitive to incoming voltage drops and spikes. We had 100 amp service on the farm and outdated overhead wiring. After I used the welder in the shop we would have to re-boot the wifi if we were lucky, but sometimes the wifi needed to be replaced. Our computer tec told us wifi's are very sensitive to voltage variations and recommended an expensive battery backup surge protector. The new surge protector helped with the problem but did not totally solve it. Then five years ago or so the service to the farm was completely updated with larger conductor, the transformer was moved up close to the buildings instead of way out on the road and a 200 amp box was installed. This ended the wifi problems completely. It's worth checking out, I am sure the experienced sparkies on this site can help you with the how to do it part.

Bret4207, my Lenovo laptop does the same thing.

Have to disconnect/connect and it'll work again.

Have noticed it only seems to happen on Facebook, especially when I click on one of those clickbait posts.

Yes, sometimes I can't help myself. Some of them are funny.

If you figure it out let us know.

Thanks for the ideas guys. It only happens with my laptop. I'll try rebooting the router. I've rebooted my laptop several times after running CCleaner. No joy. This didn't happen with the old router, so I'm sure it's something with the router and my laptop.

The security setting on the encryption... ie wpa, wpa2 can cause problems. Setting for mixed mode so you can run the older wifi with the newer wifi security and speed settings must be on. And if you you have G only, this will stop the older A or B devices from working.

There's only one router running.
