Dinner Bell

It would be expensive, but getting it powder coated would be the most permanent.

They would bead blast it down to clean metal, a one stop and done job.

I had a church bell done,it sits out front of the building and it was a mess. I got a deal because it was for the church,$100.00 and it looks great. Its been 15 years now.
An alternative would be spray galvanized. Most welding supply shops will have it.

Wire wheel it to clean the rust off. Prime it & paint it. Oil based paints. Brush on (rattle cans apply a really thin coat.

The other methods are great, but there is some cost, or access to equipment needed.

If you want to paint, I would wire brush it, apply rust converter (phosphoric acid), use rustoleum primer for heavy rust and paint with flat black rustoleum.

Good chance there will be pits, so flat black is best..

Other acids may remove rust, but you want to convert rust back to metal..so you need a rust converter..

Darker shades of Rustoleum paint fade badly in sunlight for me. Implement paints are somewhat better.

X 2.
I bought one 48 years ago and the old guy I bought it from said don't paint it.
It dulls the tone.
It still is on a poll outside my house in it's work clothes.

Most people want a black dinner bell.
Paint it any color you want.. I would still use rust converter, rustoleum primer for heavy rust and rustoleum paint.

Check out the link below. They sell bell parts and have a page of refurbishing a bell. They also have some history about the bells, etc. IIRC they purchased the original company that made the bells. I think they go back to 1886. Back in the 80's bells became popular and there were a lot of clones made. I have one,( original ? )I refurbished last fall, I wire wheeled and brush painted with rustoleum. Still has a good tone. Mounted it on a 5 inch dia. round pine post.
