Picked up a few tools at auction. Got this mint I would call sled style bore gage for $90. Payed more than I thought I should have, but it
is like new condition. I have never seen or used this style dial bore gage but am thinking this may be easier to use for checking taper and
out of round than a conventional bore gage?

High quality tool, like is says on the enclosed brochure. My dad left me some Starrett tools from when he was a machinist in W.W.II.

Great find. I mic the crank and zero the bore gage with the mic then the bore gauge read clearance directly. Only way to check cylinder taper and out of round. When checking cylinders I zero the bore with a gaged mic to the listed bore. When checking piston clearance I mic the piston and zero the bore gauge. The gauge then reads directly in clearance.

I have one like that. Yours might be a later model but looks identical . Bought it in about 1960 and have used it a million times for sure. It can be tricky to keep it from cocking in cylinder.

I measure large connecting rod ends for out of round also. Lock it and then read actual diameter with outside micrometer.
