lacquer thinner to swell seal

I've heard you could put lacquer thinner in standard transmission, transfer case, etc. and it would swell seal and stop it from leaking. If so how much?

I would try some Lucas stop leak. That's
what it is meant for, it swells and
softens hard seals.

Have had good experience with it.

Please, please, please, do not put lacquer
thinner, brake fluid, etc., in anything to
stop leaks. Or recommend it to others.
All it does is take a leaky, but
operational, unit and make it non-
operational.

I'd suggest just changing the seal in the first place rather than the snake oil. Dad is about to find out about that on one of his cars with a leak.

Generally seal stop leaks work by softening the rubber a little which makes them also swell a little. The leak is often stopped but the softness makes the seal wear faster so there are only so many running hours or miles in the seal after the treatment.
