Cat (Beckman) 6V7800 Multimeter

Ok After nearly 40 years, I broke my Cat Multimeter. The front dial, and the post are broken. Anyone know of a place to repair, or is it time to just move on? I got it when I was a field service rep for Cat, so I guess I have a bit of a historical connection.

Don't know of a place to repair it offhand, but if it's just the post snapped off it should be a pretty straightforward repair. As mentioned, see what holds the post on--if it's just screwed on a replacement plastic post should be easy to fabricate and if not one of the various plastic welders or even a good hot-melt glue might enable you to build up enough of a replacement post to file back down to shape, perhaps with a small screw through the dial to hold everything steady.

I worked with electronics. For over fifty years. Never heard of a Cat meter. You might open it up and see who made it. Or toss it.

I used the Beckman model at the shop I worked in during the seventies and eighties. It was a very good meter at the time. If you can glue or patch the meter - do it, but there are many new meters out there that are better and have the newer technology. I think repair would be out of the question because that switch would probably have to be replaced. You can find used Beckman Meters on Ebay. You might be able to swap the internals with your meter to keep that CAT name plate.

I have a fluke 77 meter that needs repairing also. I was hoping some one would know of someplace or somebody to do repairs on the meters.. A new Fluke to replace this one is $300-400 now. I contacted the mfr. and they want to sell me a new one instead of repairing this one.

Interesting. I still have my working Fluke 77 from 35 years ago and they used to fix them for free. Probably not a good business practice.

Have many newer meters including two with clamp on DC current, but still have my Beckman HD 100 with the original box (and it still works).

Probably dates to about 1983.

Could you possibly put a small screw into the post to hold the knob back on? Although some of them turn kind of hard. If that doesn't work take it apart and try to make a new post.

There's several Beckman "HD100's" on ebay, starting at $15, they appear quire similar, mite B able to cannibalize one for the shaft and knob, or, perhaps put the whole "guts" in your Caterpillar case.

That looks almost exactly like the Beckman meter I carried for work 40 years ago, except for the Caterpillar. Mine also had a 10 Amp current terminal. I always liked that meter.

If you can find a vintage Beckman, the guts of it should fit in your case. Don't get one with the 10 Amp option.

I took mine apart and cleaned the rotary switch and tweaked the contacts it was a simple repair. Sum'N like this but I thought I had to take the switch apart.

No help to your request but I had one 40 years ago. Good little meter for the price but did not hold up to the rugged use of lineman. So we upgraded to Flukes. Flukes are a lot more money but very rugged, accurate and I think most linemen and electricians prefer them. I have had my Fluke for nearly 40 years.
