Battery maintainer and de-sulfator

My battery has a parasitic drain that I can't find, so small it does not spark. If I get a battery maintainer and de-sulfator, will
the de-sulfator work with the drain? I'll get one big enough to overcome the parasitic drain.

Bill

If you unhook the battery does it still go dead?? If it does the battery is going bad. If on the other hand it stays up that may work but I would take it some place and have it load tested just to be sure it isn't going bad

If the plates are badly sulphated (spelling??) that lowers efficiency and capacity and if there's too much build up in the bottom of a battery that can cause a shorted cell. I have no idea as far as the quality of any so called de-sulfator and how much it may or may not help with sulphation on the plates, adds say it does FOR WHAT THATS WORTH LOL

However, subject to the parasitic drain amperage and the battery maintainers capacity sure it could prevent battery discharge

Why not disconnect the battery?
How long does it take to Desulfate a Battery?
The process of desulfating your battery may take 48 hours or more, or even a couple of weeks if extreme sulfation has occurred. When the sulfation condition on a common car battery is not too severe, the reconditioning process will be streamlined considerably. In some cases, the battery can desulfate in a few hours after using a good 12v smart charger.

Fighting a drain with a chargin/desulphating device seems incorrect. Disconnect the battery and use your desulphating tool on it alone. Then fix the drain !! Jim

I agree with Jim, devote your energy to finding the problem instead of trying to overcome it with a charger.

Don't know what you are working on, but if it's a simple vehicle without electronics, get an incandescent (not LED or neon) test light, connect it in series between the disconnected battery cable and the battery post. Be sure everything is off, the light should not burn bright. A dim glow is normal with an electronic voltage regulator, it would take months to discharge a healthy battery.

If the light burns bright, start pulling fuses, disconnecting accessories, looking for trunk lights, under hood lights, something failing to turn off.

If this is a modern vehicle, you need a milliamp meter to test for a draw. Used the same as the test light, but it must be connected while the battery is connected and the connection maintained when the battery cable is removed. You're looking for a draw of 50 milliamps or less.

All newer vehicles come with a built in parasitic drain. My 2018 Silverado can sit 5 or 6 weeks without starting. I keep a maintainer plugged into it all the time. I'm also a firm believer in hydrogen peroxide in the battery if it is not sealed. Interestingly enough, the same maintainer on my 6 volt 49 Pontiac with no parasitic drain, tends to over charge the battery if left on all the time.

It's a 40 year old tractor and I have installed a knife switch on the Neg terminal and that ended the problem. But I have to leave the radiator screen off to get to switch and I want to end that. My though was a remote maintainer to over come the very small drain and was concerned the constant drain might not let the de-sulphating work.

The fact that it has the drain is the real issue. If you tell us more about the tractor we may be able to assist in fixing the problem. Some battery drains are prelude to a fire, some are just annoying. Desulfate the battery while the knife switch is open. Jim

WNYBill,

Desulfator is supposed to remove any desulfation in the battery, (SNaKE OIL). It will do nothing for the battery drain anyway.

Have you checked for a parasitic drain on top of the battery?. The secret to battery life is simple....Keep it charged!

In other words, if its 100% charged no disulfatin needed!

Guido.
