Centrifugal fertilizer transfer pump seized

Last year when I went to plant corn the small centrifugal pump (think "trash pump") was seized up. Luckily all I had to do was split the pump body and free up the impeller.

So when I was done I was extra careful to rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse until nothing but clear water came out all the holes and drains in the pump. I left all the drain holes open, shook the pump around tipped it every which way until I was sure as much water was out of it as possible.

This spring, SEIZED AGAIN. When I split the pump this time it was FULL of gray sludge. I mean full.

Obviously I didn't get it cleaned out, but why wasn't rinsing until clear water came out good enough, and how did all this sludge not drain out? Have I got to split the pump at cleanout time?

Well now, that's a puzzle. Is it possible
that the sludge seeped into the pump after
you flushed it and it sat? I have no idea
what the line runs look like or whether
residue could seep into the pump. It
sounds like your flushing procedure was
fine.

I used to rinse with water and then flush with used anti-freeze from a shop. It has anti-rust stuff in it. You could buy RV anti-freeze, too. I bet leaving the pump full
of antifreeze will save you next year.

Hard to say exactly, but one possibility is that if you only rinsed it in the direction of flow, there may still have been pockets of material in low-flow areas of the pump that were only wetted by the rinsing and seeped down to the impeller over time.

If when done after washing out run it with water circulating through a clean tank to help it flush out. then drain and fill with wast engine oil and drain that out. Will be fine the next year. I don't pump fertilizer with mien so I just flush and drain then let set empty with no problems so far.
