ZIM valve grinder instructions

I have the antique valve grinder kit #301 with all the parts (I think).
Does anyone have the instruction sheet that is missing from my box?
The parts I have seem pretty simple, but I would like to see the actual instructions.
Thanks, Tom/Idaho

I have one in the box too. I don't recall instructions being in the box.

How I use mine: The tapered coil spring is a key component. You oil the valve stem, place a tiny bit of grinder compound on the valve face in three evenly spaced places, put the spring on the valve stem and drop the valve in the valve guide. The spring will keep the valve from closing on the seat in the block.

Install the proper 'driver' in the valve tool. I usually use one of the shafts with a suction cup pressed up on it. (actually I never take it off the older grinder that I actually use.)

I do want to add that some early engine valves had screwdriver slots in the heads or had pin holes and there is an adapter that can be used to turn them using the holes or slot and it is even more positive a connection to the valve than the suction cup. because the suction cup can slip.

Then I place the suction cup on the head of the valve and gently push the valve down against the valve seat against the spring pressure while I begin turning the grinder crank. You don't turn particulary fast. The grinder will probably jam up if you do. Every time your hand goes upward as it is going around the crank, allow the valve to come off the seat a tiny bit. This allows the lapping compound to flow back between the valve and the seat.

Inspect your job often. And this does require wiping all the lapping compound of both the valve and seat. When the seat is pretty well scuffed by the lapping compound - no gaps or anything- and your valve has a matching scuffed area around its face you are as done as you ever will be with this method.

Be sure to wipe the seat, port and valve very thoroughly clean of any lapping compound. It is murder to rings and bearings.

T.R.K. Your information explains it all. I was unsure about the spring and flat pieces. Thank you very much. I have made a copy of your instructions and put it in the box. Tom/Idaho
