A tale of two taps. These two taps are both the same size...M12x1.75. But they are very different. One has four sets of cutters, one three. The one with three has flutes like a drill at the end. The one with four is magnetized. There is some writing on the sides.

Four row - D6 HS USA
Three row - HSSE, (not legible), O H 4, 2515, JAPAN

Curious as to why the two different styles. Not sure I ever saw one like the Japan one.

One likely a machine driven (NC Vertical Mill ,with drill like point) The other standard hand tap. HS and HSS stands for High Speed Steel. D6 class of fit. Jim

The spiral flute is for blind holes. The spiral pulls chips up out the top so they don't pack in the bottom of the hole.

Usually 4 flute taps are for hand tapping, easier to turn as each flute has less to cut. Two and 3 flute are more for power tapping, harder to turn, but stronger.

The magnetized tap may have been intentionally magnetized if someone was trying to capture the chips so they didn't get into whatever was being tapped. Ot it may have just got near something magnetic and picked it up on it's own.

There are so many kinds of taps I can't begin to understand all of them! Specialty taps for different metals, oversize for parts going to heat treat, special coatings for chip removal, displacement taps, the list is extensive!
