I visited the Leretto chapel 15 years ago and saw this staircase. Marveled at it . Forgot about it till today a friend sent me a video of it. Brought back some memories.
I would encourage you to look at it because I like to know what tools were available 150 years ago to make this stairway. I dont know but someone has to know how this old man did this by himself. From what remember theres a no tool marks anywhere on it that I could see.
Let me if you have a clue.

We visited there last November SO BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING I suggest anyone visit it........ Note NO CENTER SUPPORT !!!!!!!! Legend says St Joseph was the builder ???

Under the stair ,that look like like spalded maple veneer , no butt joint that I could , glad you posted photo
The original staircase did not have side railing, added later , that must have been very hard to walk up .scary height ,dont lose your balence

It is owned by the hotel next door - no longer consecrated Catholic ground. You can rent it for weddings - I got married there in the early 90s with a protestant wedding.

At the shrine they have tons of historical info plus a nice presentation we enjoyed. Tells the story and legend plus some construction facts.
