Tachometers

What do you all use for setting or checking the RPM's on our old 4
cylender engines? I have several with Magneto's and Distributors. Now
that I think of it I have single cylenders also. Garden tractor, lawn
mower, chain saw etc. Can I get one tach that will work on all of them?
Quality and accuracy is more important to me than price, within reason.
Oh, and Father's Day is coming, hint hint.

Here's mine, but it's a revolution counter, you need a watch to use it as a tachometer. Works best on slow rotating shafts, like a 540 pto, probably wouldn't last long at 8,000 rpm!

I bought a digital meter that has a wire you wrap around spark plug wire. It's very accurate. I needed to set the rpms on Kawasaki 4010 mule to exactly 950 rpms.
I recommend getting a meter that you can replace the battery.
I got mine off Ebay for Amazon

Harbor freight sells a digital tachometer that you out a piece of reflective tape on the crank pulley, aim the meter at it, and it picks up the rotations. I bought one to check my buddies old diesel irrigation pump, works great.

If this is for a threshing cylinder speed, the speed is all just an estimate anyway. Set it close with the concaves or cylinder clearance close then adjust as you go till you get the sample you are looking for.
