Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Sealer

What kind of experience has anybody had using this product for something other than gasket sealing? i.e. on other rubber components like cv joint, rubber boots covers etc.

The Ultra Black is what it is, a premium grade, high temp silicone sealer.

It will not work miracles.

No way it will repair a ripped CV boot, nor should it be used to try to glue it on, it will only add to the likely hood of it pulling off.

It can be used as caulking in some applications, but it has limited strength as a repair/bonding agent.

Super glue is very effective in the repair of CV rubber , O rings and similar components . Nothing is a substitute for proper replacement of course , but it works , works effectively and more importantly lasts a long time .

It's good stuff and worth trying in a pinch but don't expect miracles even though you might get one.

I once pulled a rabbits tooth out of my truck radiator. Cleaned it good with brake cleaner and filled the hole with ultra black. I let it cure 24 hours before refilling the radiator. I drove the truck another 15 years and it never leaked. Another time I poked a hole in a tractor tire. Had a new tube and boot put in. Cleaned the hole with brake cleaner and filled it with ultra black. That one lasted about ten years before it popped out.

I've had plenty of failures with it too.

I used it to stop a leak running down the A - pillar in my (2014) Impala, had to take the headliner down to get at it. It's been over a year ago now with no leaks.

Other than gaskets.

I used it in the kitchen to seal the joint where black countertops meet the backsplash.

As well the joint where a black granite composite sink meets the countertop.

It has held up well, the only reason I used it was color preference.

I use NP1 in a caulking tube and gun.
Get it at a lumber yard store.
That stuff is amazing.
If you let it set for about 48 hours, you better not want to separate what you glued together.
Used it to glue this sold ribber tire on a wheel a couple of weeks ago.
Cleaned up the wheel and tire and pried the tire out enough to squirt it in.

Keep some in the shop as a temporary fix to seal leaking cracked rims to help someone out in a pinch. But I make sure to state on the repair bill. "Work not guaranteed".

Don't think it would stick to well on a CV boot. Maybe if you were to clean the boot and buff it like repairing an inner tube to get down to raw rubber it may hold a little while.
=============

You can buy a split CV boots that come with a tube or bottle of glue made for rubber boots. Heard a lot of good on them. Biggest complaint is you better have them aligned right the first time for the glue sets up fast and you only get one shot.

Ive heard of guys using it to seal crankcase halves on chainsaws without any problem but permatex does not recommend using it a sealant where gasoline is present.Ive never had the nerve to try it myself always going with Stihls recommendation.

I like it a lot better than the other silicones. It doesn't come off inside an engine. It is difficult to scrape off, and impossible to get off your hands! It's worth a try on rubber; let us know if it works!
