I have the cast in balance shaft marks on crank for both the primary & secondary balance gears. What/where is the valve timing mark on crank ? I have the Kolher manual but its not clear to if there are 3 crank marks or if one of the balance shaft marks is used for valve timing. Thanks

I am thinking there are 2 marks on those cranks. You use the one closest to the gear to time the cam to the crank. The one that is kinda on the 'web' of the rod throw is for the upper gear. I forget which mark is for the lower gear, but the heavy side should align with the heavy side of the upper balance gear.

I am thinking the upper gear has to be mounted on its shaft, then you put the camshaft in, then you put the crank in, aligning the cam and the balance gear as you go in with the crank, then you can slip the lower gear in from the bottom.

What kohler is wanting is when the piston goes up, the heavy side of the balance gears to go down.

If you put them back in, be sure the shafts are not badly worn and the bearings are snug, with correct end play.

Yeah, not concerned about the balance gears have them set right with proper clearance. I have a OLD Kohler manual & it does not advise what mark to use for cam/crankshaft timing. Thanks

The Kohler factory manual gives instructions for this job two ways, with and without the special tool.

Have a good paint marker at hand and closely follow the instructions as to counting and marking teeth as you begin and you'll figure it out.

The "primary timing mark", the one on the crankshaft that's nearest the gear, is used to time the camshaft, as well.

You can download and use and print as needed a later manual with the balance gear timing shown in detail for FREE at the official Kohler website. (.pdf format)
