leaking oil fill pipe

Just installed a new oil tank in the house. One of the fittings just leaks a little bit. Anything I can seal fitting from outside ? Thanks

Did you use a gas/oil fitting or a water
line fitting? If it's the proper fitting
and tightening doesn't stop it you need
to re flare it.

Not really. Any adhesive needs a clean surface to stick to, and a weeping fitting will never be clean.

If it's a pipe thread, it might need to be tightened, but may need disassembly, cleaned, and adequate pipe dope. A copper
compression or flare fitting might just need to be snugged up some.

All depends on what is leaking.

Either way, address it now. It won't get better over time, and leaking fuel oil gets into the floor and has it's own aroma,
and fire danger.

You don't say whether it's a flare fitting, pipe fitting or something else. If it's a flare fitting, then you should be able to tighten it further without disassembling anything. But if it's a pipe fitting, you'll probably have to disconnect something in order to tighten it.

I've oftener wonder why Maine uses oil for home heating ?
Here in Michigan we did also until in the 80's people started changing to LP. Now it's unusual to see fuel oil used for home heating.
A lot of oil for diesel farm tractors.

Dusty, how much would you buy at $3.00/gal?

On a sewer line with a leaking fitting, I wrapped the fitting a couple of times with an old inner tube and put three
hose clamps on it. It has been 15 years and no leaks.

The "right" way to fix it, is, of course, to disassemble, replace any defective components, and reassemble. However, as it's on what sounds like a low-or-no pressure line used only occasionally to fill the tank, one possibility for a fix is Seal-All. It's an old standby for such things and can even be applied to active leaks if necessary. Link is just what popped up on Amazon to show the product, though it's available many other places also.
Seal all

Loctite 487234 Threadlocker 290 Penetrating Liquid. It is designed for use on assembled joints to wick into any space in the threads. I would wait until a week before my next delivery to use it. Since fuel oil does evaporate, albeit slowly, it will work best when there is less of it in the joint.

I can tell you why, It costs a lot more to heat with propane and natural gas is only available in major metropolitan ares. It is oil, wood, or wood pellets. and limited coal suppliers.

I assume it only leaks when filling and
threaded black iron pipe into a fitting.
I would clean it by spraying it with
starting fluid. Let it dry and put a
fillet of jb weld around where pipe
threads into fitting.
