New tool box

I posted here quite a while back wondering if anyone had or used a US General bottom box from harbor freight. Some posted back saying they were good, and reviews on the net said the same. I finally went today to get one. The guy in the store checked the back room and said they had 2 in stock. One perfect, and one with a small ding. I looked at it and it is a very small ding on one of the back corners. He said he would take 10 percent off I said how about 15 percent. He agreed and it’s now in my garage. 44 inch wide and yellow. I’ll put my old top box on this one and it should suit me well !

That ding wouldn’t bother me. Just this week, I purchased some 1/2” drive impact-rated Torx bits from Amazon. They were half-off because the plastic case was slightly deformed. I pressed it out to where you can hardly notice it.

Yeah you can’t hardly notice it, and it will be against the back wall ! Who cares !

Like I said I read posts here and online reviews and it was pretty highly rated ! I spent around 450 with tax. A snap on box would have been thousands ! I looked at craftsman, kobalt and others and liked this the best !

I have one. The 44" bottom.Bought on sale 4-5 years ago. roller bearing drawers. Good box!Put my old 26" Craftsman top on it. I shoud have sprung for the top box too_Only 'complaint' :) is they move too freely.Box is not level, slopes to the rear. The drawers wont stay open. They simply shut on their own. ;)

There's a lot of those Harbor Freight boxes around now for a decent price. I think this style Snap On was about $1900 new with out the side box in 1981. This one was about three years old when I bought it, wish it had the fancy drawer slides.

I have the upper & lower 44" units. Evaluated many boxes during my search. For my needs, this was the best bang for the buck. For most of us, our boxes sit in one place for years. For Mechanics or maintenance people who move their heavy boxes around, one needs to evaluate the cabinet undercarriage construction and wheels for getting mileage around a building. Even so, some angle irons and good casters costing about $100 would make even the cheapest box roll round a factory much better.

Can't understand the draw for someone to spend thousands on a Snap-on box. They'll repair wear, but won't repair damage, which is what most see.

To each his own.....

I wasn’t familiar with Vidmar. Looked it up and see it’s a
division of Stanley. Never saw one in person. I had been
watching local Craig’s list and such, but all there ever is are
Snap On, Mac, and such at way more money than I wanted to
spend, or cheap used beat up boxes cheap.

Yeah my box will never move. 3 or 4 mechanics in our shop at work have Snap On or Mac boxes. I want to say they are the bigger 72 inch boxes. Most are loaded with expensive tools ! I sure wouldn’t want a payment to the tool guy like that ! I know there is no tool allowance ! I know quality tools are important, but I could never justify say spending 300 bucks on a set of 3/8 sae sockets when I can get by with a decent quality set for say 60 bucks. But I am not a full time mechanic.

I am seriously now considering getting the top box also ! I am putting my craftsman 26 inch middle box on top of it. Could use just a little more room. I guess I could always put my 26 inch craftsman top box on it also. Top box isn’t in great shape though. Top is also a cheaper craftsman like my bottom was. Middle box is a little nicer. It has the black drawer fronts instead of red. I think back when I bought it it was considered “professional” or something. A long time ago !

I bought the 44" box last year. If I had to do it again I would buy the next bigger box. It has a couple bigger drawers. The 44's drawers are to shallow for many things. I would even consider getting the 72" if I had the room. Overall I think the 56" is actually the best bang for the buck. Other than that the 44" has been really nice and done everything I've asked of it.

So do you get a different colored box for metric? lol Today is the last day of the HF sale for 30% off of everything under 10 bux. Thinking about making a run.

(quoted from post at 08:32:24 02/15/21) I d really like that 72 . I d really really like a John Deere 56 or 72 inch

A can of green spray paint will fix that. I'd probably leave inch drawers red and maybe spray the drawer fronts for metric tools a different color. I'd still have to label the front of each drawer or else leave the open a crack so I can see what is in them.
